There has been a state of emergency declared for the entire state of Florida, and it looks like this Hurricane is going to be the mother of all beasts, with speeds in excess of 200 mph and average speeds of 185 mph, it has been Upgraded to Category 5. Basically going to be very destructive if it makes landfall, which it seems it is going to, Miami has had an executive evacuation order, and at the minute those in the rest of the state are on high alert, my problem is my lads are out there, and I'm not sure whether to tell them to go North to Jacksonville or take an early flight home.

Anyway hope I can get some input, as I need to give instructions to the boys.................<ok>

We can look forward to the tail end of it, as we always do. in about 7 or 8 days. Hope the lads will be ok but it shows how puny we humans are when nature shows its destructive side.

Was up all night trying to sort out flights, finished at 6 am this morning, after finally getting a Thomas cook flight for Saturday to Stansted, I will murder my Brother-in-law when he gets back, as he organised this trip, I have never been to the USA, and have no interest in ever going, but my youngest wanted to go and it all went over my head, could not believe he booked at the peak Hurricane season, anyway my oldest boy gave him a good bollocking, for booking this trip at peak Hurricane season, and has been trying to get him to realise the urgency of this storm, the plonker was sure it would just pass, and it was not until the authorities advised him otherwise that he woke up, they are are advising all Tourists to get flights out ASAP, while they can, or go up state.

The Hurricane is not supposed to touchdown in Florida until Sunday, Fingers crossed that they won't shut down Orlando Airport Saturday..........<ok>

It is a hell of a storm there is no doubt about that and will destroy almost every timber built buildings in it's path and there are many timber buildings in Florida. I love the place....The problem is the storm is slow moving and that makes things worse.....You just have to look at the situation hour by hour closer to the time Dragon...

Got a sister in Florida , hope she and Phil's lads are out of harms way . My sister pleaded with me for years to move to Florida, to her place , and make a fortune roofing, coming in behind the Hurricanes ..... probably should have... I miss the sea massively .

Friend of mine has a place in St Martin, lucky enough he's back home, but found out earlier that the apartment block has been demolished. The whole place is a disaster area.

I see they have instructed tourists to get out of the Florida Keys. If the storm surge happens and with most of the place only feet above water level, that could wipe out the whole of the Keys.

Just chatted 'electronically' with someone I know on Nevis, they seemed to have missed the worst of it but it was scary!

The more sensible thing to do if you find yourself in the path of this monster storm is not to fight it and join the masses trying to escape and find yourself in no mans land stuck in a gridlock...It is best to stay where you are and find if you can underground shelter and wait until it passes....

High ground would not be an option. The storm dont just happen on lower ground and Florida is mainly flat anyway....If it hits the Florida keys then i dont hold much hope that it will still be there when it passes.....
