And return shipbuilding to its home on the mighty Wear? Could be an interesting idea for some potential investors in the area?
When Maggie dropped the cranes she effectively scuppered any attempt to bring back real shipbuilding to the Wear. The cost of replacing even one of them would price us out of the market straight away. Sad but true. Although I'd love be proved wrong
I should have known better than to post on a thread containing the "B" word. It would seem that whatever the op posted it would always descend into an in/out exchange. Pity really when whatever your views there's room for discussion without the entrenched opinions that kill these threads
Don't mind if we leave as long as a trade agreement and Irish border issues are in place.. It is a no deal Brexit which would be a financial disaster, particularly for northern cities like ours..
Doubt it, unfortunately the skills have pretty much gone, the youngest time served tradesman who worked there will be over 50 now.
Shipbuilding in the days of our dads and grandads was proper gadgies work, ditto coal mines. The place is populated by pansies these days. The majority wouldnt last a day
Forgive my ignorance on the subject as i've lived o/s since i was a young'un. Why (brief synopsis please) is a no deal brexit a bad thing? What are the pro's and cons of whether a deal is struck. As an outsider i can't possibly fathom how it would benefit the EU to impose any form of trade sanctions for example as the UK is one of the major importer of things made in Europe.
Really? Cause last I checked Boris hasn't said how he plans to replace the region's £595.6m EU cash for economic development, the £1.1 billion of inward foreign direct investment from EU members, the £800 million from the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy Or the millions they pour into the region's universities. The shared prosperity fund consultation hasn't even been published yet. So how can you say that without the guarantees of said funds being replaced fully? Fact is we've got a future riddled with uncertainty, where there is uncertainty there's no foresight, without foresight you can't plan efficiently. So how folk can just assume everything will be better I don't know. I find it baffling. Think many will get a shock at how rough it's going to be initially.
Uk is a major exporter of foodstuffs. It exports motor vehicles. Dont let the brexit boys have you believe it is rule Britannia world out there. Farage and his lying consorts have sold a monstrous lie. Fool britannia
It's concentrated in Sth Korea and Japan, so I've no idea how or why it would come back to the Wear. Let alone why Brexit would encourage its return. Nee chance
That's why i asked the question. I genuinely have no idea whether it's a good or a bad thing. I understand the border restrictions and what that may mean for expat retiree's etc. but wouldn't the UK be in a position to negotiate their own trade deals with any country? If import tariffs are imposed for goods coming from Europe wouldn't that encourage manufacture within the UK? As i said, it's a genuine question as i'm so far removed from it.
This is the real issue I agree with you. The skills, the knowledge, and probably the attitude to hard graft to some degree has gone. Id love a return to a vibrant and industrious town and docks etc, but sadly I cannot think of anything that would bring back that sort of industry or employment. I do worry about the region as a whole particularly if Nissan goes. I dread to think how long it would take to recover as the regions suffered enough blows to the bollocks as it is
The massive potential of the town, with its manufacturing infrastructure, was swept away by Thatcher and her cronies, for political reasons and they made sure with help from the EU it would never return. We need to move on, and the town is doing that with the help it gets from the EU, not the London-centric government
as said, the skills have all but gone but it was not just down to the shipbuilding part, suppliers are all gone as are the steelworks needed, it would involve a massive network having to be set in place first. would be excellent to be able to get back to those days of walking out of a job on friday and starting a new one on the monday but unless you are a skilled telephone operator you have little chance these days...i watch lads in their 30's trying to do their gardens now and they are fecked in less than half an hour.
