A broad brush question here but if you could take one player... at their peak from the past to help us stay up who would it be and would it be enough to stop us falling through the trapdoor?

For me it has to be Alan Shearer at his peak.

In the remaining games he would get at least 5 goals I think and also be the leader we need on the pitch.

A close second would be Woodgate. The finest CB I've ever seen in a black and white shirt.

Darren Peacock. Would shore up the defence and scare the ****e out of some of the pussy forwards that are about these days.

For me it would be Diego Maradona of the 1980s.

Won the World Cup with an average Argentinian side in 1986 and got to the final in 1990 with a poor side and an ankle problem. Also won 2 league titles with Napoli, a side that had never won the league before.

If there is one player that could single handedly win a game no matter how good the rest of the team are, it's Maradona

...or did you mean just players that had played for Newcastle previously?

    Laurent Robert.
I was tempted by Woodgate, but the defence is screwed anyway and one player isn't gonna fix it. Instead get Robert and Townsend feeding virtually anyone up top and I think law of averages suggests some of those decent balls into the box are gonna bounce off someone and into the net. And if all else fails we'll just keep diving around the box so Robert can knock those free kicks in.

Brian Kilcline, stopped us going down in 1992, and would sort out the team now. Otherwise Andy Cole to bang them in, or Pavel as he was a decent keeper and hardly ever got injured.

Practically speaking it would have to be a left back right now. Beresford.

Shearer would be pretty useful up front though.

I was, I confess. We could use a left back though.

Out of our former players (if they were at their peak), right now I'd take any of Iam McFall, Dave Beasant, Shay Given, Steve Harper or Fraser Forster.

Sorry Karl - but I'm nervous!!
