... and don't mind admitting it. All day, and this evening, I've seen the news talking about the Olympics and featuring Mohamed Karim Sbihi MBE. Now, I have to admit, I had no idea who the bloke was and why he was awarded the MBE. Apparently the MBE was for 'services to rowing' which I assume actually means 'rowing because he enjoys rowing'. Being born to a middle class family with an English mother, in Kingston on Thames, how could he not like rowing. But what's really confused me is that they're making a massive deal out of him being, dramatic pause, ... ... the first British Muslim flag bearer!!! Wow, how absolutely incredible that someone's religious beliefs should be so massively significant. As a church going Methodist I wonder if the BBC would make such a massive deal if it had been me ... ... or would they be so triumphant if he was a Jehovahs Witness or Mormon. The bloke is British ffs, hence he represents Britain ... ... why bring religion into sport at all.
i heard the news and wondered why the fuss...then i wondered, did he deserve it or did he get it just so 'we' can prove we are a country for everyone. i guess unless you are into the rowing brigade his name will mean nowt and as you well know, some people get these 'awards' because of their status in society while real people who do a lot of good lose out. ...but, and this is what gets me, had someone made 'a thing' about him being muslim then he/she would be slammed as racist, but the fact that the news can make a big thing about it and it needs celebrating then that tells people all they need to know. PS: before the usual feckwits jump in, i honestly do not care about colour or religion or anything else, if a person deserves it then they deserve it and their background should not need to come into it.
It's because you've all been forced into thinking that you must look past colour, religion, culture because it doesn't matter and we're all equal, then like you said, the media can't stop pointing it out.
And that's the conundrum that proves the idiocy in it all. Highlight a 'winner' as a Muslim = equality... ... highlight a murderer as a Muslim = racism.
It's not always successful. However the schools, governments and entertainment industries are infiltrated Ps I should've put "we've" instead of "you've" in my original comment
