Ipswich Town v Sunderland – Skybet League One Last time out Sunderland drew with Oxford and Ipswich beat Burton. Sunderland made a disappointing start to the new season with a 1-1 draw in front of over 33,000 fans. Jack Ross could have a difficult afternoon at Portman Road having turned down the chance of managing Ipswich Town in the Championship before taking the challenge of managing Sunderland in League One. Ipswich took just 11 minutes of the new season to open the scoring as Everton loanee Luke Garbutt had his effort deflected into the bottom corner. James Norwood arrived from Tranmere in the summer on the back of an incredible campaign in League Two last term that saw him net 32 goals. Jack Ross: “We still have some missing and some edging closer to full fitness also. Aiden [McGeady] has had a full week of training and is more or less up to speed now, Max [Power] is getting closer in terms of the amount of training he’s done. Duncan Watmore has picked up a knock and is unavailable, Charlie Wyke and Ethan Robson are both still unavailable, but those who missed a lot of pre-season like Aiden and Max, Chris [Maguire] missed a bit also, they’re getting back towards full fitness now as well. All three have trained all week.” “Ideally you would like every player available for all of pre-season, but we had most of the squad for the majority of the sessions. Aiden and Max were obviously both carrying their injuries from last season, but with the exception of that we’ve been okay.” “It is frustrating when you pick up little niggles here and there that impact on everyone being available, but by and large we’re okay.” Paul Lambert: “It will be a cracking atmosphere on Saturday and the support we had at Burton and the noise the fans made was fantastic. They were worth the entrance money alone” “We played well and deserved to win at what is a really tough place to come, I don’t think I have ever won at Burton as a manager. They are a good side and will cause teams problems this year." “It’s important that we do start well in the league for everyone connected to the Club, for the players, the staff and for the supporters, who were incredible again today. “There were a few things that concerned me and we will deal with that, but there were a lot of good things out there. “We were a threat going forward and Danny Rowe was excellent for us. He’s a confidence player and looks to have his mojo back.” Prutton predicts: Meh Match Appointments: Referee: NEIL HAIR Assistants: Andrew Aylott and Bhupinder Gill Fourth Official: Garry Maskell Team Line ups Sunderland: J.McLaughlin, C.McLaughlin, Flanagan, Willis, Hume, McGeouch, Dobson, O'Nien, Gooch, Embleton, McNulty Subs: Burge, Ozturk, Leadbitter, Power, Maguire, McGeady, Grigg Injured: Robson, Wyke, Loovens, Watmore Ipswich Town Holy, Donacien, Woolfenden, Wilson, Kenlock, Rowe, Mizouniat, Skuse, Downes, Garbutt, Norwood, Jackson Subs: Norris, Judge, Roberts, El Mizouni, Dobra, Huws, Clements Injured: Edwards, Nolan Betting Odds: Sunderland 6/4 Ipswich 13/8 Draw 21/10 My two pence: After all the pre-season build up we are back to the harsh reality of another hard slog in League One. Jack Ross is already under scrutiny with widespread criticism of his tactics and team selection. Well I must be one of the happy clapper deluded bunch who think that sacking managers after 1 game of the new season is not the way to go. I’ll give the team and the manager my full support because that's what supporters do. Ipswich away is a tough game whatever league you are in. My guess is a 1-1 draw Ha’way the Lads
I don't think Ross has us close to being a force to be reckoned with. Too vulnerable at the back, disjointed up top. Home win, unfortunately.
We just don’t look like a good unit at the moment especially up top, hope I’m wrong but can’t think anything but a home win at the moment.
Just on the basis that Portman Road has never been a happy hunting ground for you Mackems I'm going for a nervy 2-1 Home Win. There will be in excess of 20,000 there tomorrow so the atmosphere will be cracking, I fancy both teams to be promoted this season. For any mackems making the long trip down to Suffolk I wish you a safe and pleasant journey.
Should be a 4 team race with us 2 and Portsmouth & Peterborough so any result at your place will be decent. I hope we try and win it, set a marker, but I’ll be delighted with a point, unlike last week. It is true to say we are always ****e at Ipswich, and oddly we usually do pretty well at Norwich. Let’s be honest, neither of us have a clue yet, great start for you lads Burton is a bastard of an away fixture.
I hate not being positive for the lads, so have not voted on the prediction, cant see anything but a win for them, going out shopping for a new prayer mat, rosary beads, statue of buddha, and some holy water from the local church font, to sprinkle on the tv when we play
Ever the supporter I voted for a win... However it will probably be 1-1.. We will give at least 1 goal away, in fact I reckon we could get 46 points for the season as all our games will be 1-1. Ross will also stick with 3 CBs 2 wing backs and 2 up front. Gooch will play and 09 on the bench
Gooch was decent last week in spells to be fair. I wouldn’t mind seeing McGeady playing of McNulty, see if we can find that creative spark, with Grant & Dobson behind. No chance that’ll happen of course.
