10 career starts and only 1000 minutes of career football suggest he hasn't. He's probably developed more in the last 6 months than the previous 3 years.
And my point us perhaps there is a poignant reason he played so little. He didn't not play cos he was well good, did he. And I'd have thought sufficient managers have looked at him and decided he wasn't that great. Really for me the common denominator and him not playing is the player himself.
And my point is you dont get very good by not playing. It's a catch 22. This is why we have loans to develop players. Stephens had to go to league one to get the game time to develop. Now he's our first choice. Also Sims was thought good enough by Puel and Pellegrino, he just ended up with season ending injuries.
Puel liked him Pellegrino at the tail end played him, once he got back from injury. Then Mark Hughes ignored him like the other youth so he went to Reading, who had 3 managers in 6 months. He came back here last January, forced his way into Ralph's thoughts only to be pushed out by Boufal in the summer. My gut feeling is hes not in Ralph's plans anymore, which is a shame. But I think the constant managerial changes is what's ****ed him here in my opinion.
You're right. It was hughes rather than injury that ended his second run in the team. I remembered Pellegrino playing him after just his first u23 back from injury. I still feel like he's had 2 long term injuries but maybe I'm imagining it. Ralph currently has a fair selection of wide options do I understand not playing him currently
Seems to me that he comes in and plays an absolute blinder before struggling for a few matches and then picking up an injury/falling out of favour. Repeat every 9-12 months or so. I've never been convinced that he has what it takes at this level to be honest, but even if he has it's clearly not going to happen here so should move on imo. He really needs to be playing regularly at his age.
I don't know if we tried to sell him outright because he is good enough we want to get something for him. But we did kind of close the book on him. Sims has said that had it not been for the weirdness of MLS seasons not being sync'ed with PL, that the loan to NYC would have been a full-season loan with option to buy. I suspect that some kind of arrangement with NY is still in place, and if Sims doesn't get sold to another club then he'll be sold to NYC or loaned with the option to buy.
He can’t get better unless he plays though, can he? If we want our youngsters to develop, we have to play them. So great is the pressure to get instant results however, that no manager wants to play kids; Catch 22. That’s a general observation btw, not necessarily the case with Sims. Hope he goes to New York and thrives like Bradley Wright-Phillips has done over there.
Then there's the flip side to that. When they play and get a taste of it, then they are back out the team again. It will be interesting to see how L'pool handle this. Some of their talented kids already sound very impatient.
Maybe, but perhaps he didnt display enough in training to warrant a chance. He had a few games, and the Everton one aside, i thought he was pretty poor. At 23, Id suggest his ability is to blame for his lack of games. Didnt he also get barely played at Reading on loan, I know they had a change of manager but he struggled even at that level.
