the evening standard are reporting we are now in talks. Apparently we want a loan with option to buy... they want a straight cash deal (£20m+)
Sign him up either way!!! Personally I'd pay the £20m up front but maybe a season long loan with an option means we will do something similar to Merino and it'll allow us to buy him in October or whenever the TV money come through.
Obviously a massive chunk out of our summer budget and probably restricts the number you can bring given our other requirements (strikers and 10's are expensive) Such is his quality though I think its worth the risk.
Definitely worth it. Hopefully we sell a few players who are surplus to requirements and increase the transfer kitty.
Pretty confident he'll be signed permanently but there will be the usual ****ing on (from both sides) in agreeing the fee. It's understandable and normal to be fair.
Kenedy is a next level signing if we get him. A full season with Kenedy and Dubravka is a big step forward alone even without other changes. Add in Ki and any other advances are icing on the cake. Could we do with more? Yes of course, up front in particular we look poor and our wing backs are a lower level than the rest of the team but our midfield is coming together nicely, our central defence looks decent and I'm happy with our keepers. That's not bad at all.
There will be more signings after those. Rafa has got this and is probably having to do Charnley's job for him. I think we'll wheel and deal for the next few weeks, with those going out being replaced with better equivalents coming in and not a lot being spent overall. Then the last few days, maybe on one striker, a big fee or fees will be paid. There is a good season ahead I think. PS - I have been drinking
We finished 10th last season which was the best we could realistically have hoped for. This season ahead I can't really see us bettering that (the only team who finished above us in the league we could have a better set of players than in Burnley and I doubt we'll have a better 'team') but I can see us putting in better football performances and I'm fine with that level of improvement. We need to just make sure that in another year or two we're starting the season confidently looking up the table rather than considering relegation potential. We need to establish ourselves as a comfortable alternate destination for quality players who either can't get in at the big clubs or aren't established yet. We aren't at that point yet; not by some margin.
Yes, mid-table will be a good season. I do think we can improve on 10th with the right signings despite the budget being tight. Depends who we can get through the door, and in particular if we pay out for a proper striker befitting the Newcastle no 9 shirt.
I honestly don't think we'll get anyone better than Mitro. He's far from perfect but there you go. Obviously I trust Rafa and hope I'm just very wrong about it.An irreplaceable part of me will die inside though if we're still lining up with Joselu/Gayle next year.
