What stunned Tom Evaes was that Turbo crossed the ball when he could have shot.. He wasn't anticipating it nor expecting it..Simple as.
Did I dream it or were City on MOTD twice against Luton in the 71/72 season, and we lost both games, Malcolm McDonald giving us the runaround? Tapes long since presumed wiped by some know nowt puff at the BBC
Chant of the day at Luton ? 'Your just a fat Jimmy Saville' Aimed at a rather animated 'stout' Luton fan in a loud flowery shirt and shorts sat in the portacabin stand near the away end.
Seeing those highlights brings home to me what a bag of **** football is these days in comparison to then. No ****er fell over, there was no cheating and there were tackles. And for all the money thrown at the game these days, there was still energy, skill and entertainment. Those highlights were far more enjoyable than any match I've seen in years. Proper football, not the **** that the Premier League has caused down the footballing pyramid.
It wouldn't have been 71/72 as MM was @ Newcastle that season (in Div 1). Luton beat us both home & away in 70/71 - presumably in Div 2 MM was with them that season. We had a big edge against them in most of the mid '60s and '70s if I recall. I think Syd Owen had retired As far as MOTD, didn't realize non-Div 1 games were broadcast on telly then (certainly not BBC - maybe Lincolnshire based ITV channel ?).
Yeah it was 70/71 ...very early examples of the TV curse on us. I recall Barry Davies identifying Ken Houghton as Ken Horton in the commentary. Scary times.
As someone else mentioned it was 70-71, the first season under Terry Neill. We had made a good start to the season but came unstuck in the home game in October time - lost 2 nil. Pretty sure the second one was not long after the infamous Battle of Bramall Lane where we had won 2--1 v Sheffield United. We lost 3-1 and I think Billy Baxter our centre half messed up a backpass for one of their goals. I remember the details of stuff then (when I was 12!) better than I do matches from a couple of seasons back!
We used to be lucky because we were in both the Yorkshire and Anglia ITV regions. Anglia covered Lincs. Norfolk and Suffolk but also stretched to Luton Southend and Northampton. So we were shown fairly often particularly if we were playing an "Anglian derby".
Home game was Nov 7th (att. was 18,000 +). Ken Houghton scored our away goal (March 20th). The 2-1 win at Bramall Lane was March 6th (Simpkin & Wagstaff- in front of a full house). Hell of an atmosphere that one !
Love it ...... but Eric appears to be looking on thinking something like "hmmn, shouldn't be doing that Kamil"?
IIRC, we played in the below strip at Luton that season, on one of the two wiped games. We were also on Tyne Tees once we cut ties with Anglia. (Think Norwich were jealous of us) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/C...K5XEvJT9ZS5afJ3iXzxh6X1hcwWXtJUNt0Vt2zCuQ=s45 please log in to view this image please log in to view this image please log in to view this image Don't let's forget that some know nowt leodensian cishet has deliberately wiped perhaps our finest 70s moment - the 1-0 win v WHU ? Why? Loads of run of the mill City games were kept in the YTV archives. Here's one from the Anglia archives, your commentator Gerry Harrison
Bloody 'Ell - I'd forgotten that John Aston Jr played for Luton. His old man was a decent player for United. The "Sands of Time" catches up on one Warning: NOT a Buddy Holly track...
