I have no idea. I thought he was fine. Possibly shaded by Hoedt but Calvert-Lewin got nothing from him all game (and CL is very handy in the air too).
(I think people are looking for the bad/less than excellent in Virgil, which is perfectly understandable, but possibly not the right thing to do).
Have you any recent links where he has said he wants to go? Doesn't look like Scouse want him anymore, but Man City may be interested and who would step in his way if that option came up. To me he is playing fine, not 100% yet but I reckon he is still mindfull of a repeat injury and a bit rusty.
(and CL is very handy in the air too). Has to handy somewhere, he couldn't do anything with the ball on the ground.
He was okay, he came down on his ankle early on, which did look pretty bad, so took him a little while to run it off. He had a crucial slip when Siggy scored, but not much else wrong. But, for me he has a cob on, got a face like someone has pissed on his chips. Then when I see Yoshi & Jack on the bench it fills me with guilt. Both them lads would have handled that game as well as VvD. Saying all that, I will probably be more confident seeing him start at City, so maybe I'm being a little hypocrite.
He has been better, I agree. However he has only played a handful of game after a massive injury and lots of time out. I think that must play a part, and dare I say he likely wants to be someplace else, but I have cut him some slack for the time being.
Normally I would agree, however the errors he’s making are little sloppy ones. Like he’s lacking concentration. He doesn’t commit to challenges, his errors have cost us goals and a penalty. I might be wrong but he looks like he’s going through the motions.
Its like people have forgotten what he was like before the injury. Taking control, leading us on, bursting forward with a smile on his mush. That is not what we are getting anymore. (he's still good, but he's no MK1)
Hm. I was with you til that bit. Can't ever recall him smiling. And aside from one error, I thought he was excellent yesterday. Better than Hoedt, who also had a good game. People, in my opinion, are seeing what they want to see (though that might apply to me too, I suppose).
Stat wise he was good, completely dominated in the air as usual. Plenty of clearances etc. Passing was nowhere near as good as Hoedt's though. I also saw him make several runs forward so I'm not sure where the idea he's not doing that comes from. During the match I thought he was doing too many.
Little wry smile, sometimes a grimace, but F-me, getting out happy'd by Tadic, should get a club fine!
He gets selected so I presume the manager is happy with him. He plays less attacking than he did before, but could that be to do with the change of manager?
As above, before we had a world class defender. A complete player. I’ve not seen that from him. His injury can’t have affected his thinking time?
We've discussed this before after the Stoke(?) game I think. People will naturally look for/notice more bad in his game now. It works the other way too of course with favourites getting an easier ride.
