Well neither really had too much defending to do. Some quality pings from Wes and usual headers from Virgil. Interesting that in this little discussion nobody has pointed out the rash lunge from Wes in the penalty area on Moralles, that was a shoe lace away from a penalty. Both were good. Can't see the issue really.
I haven't seen anything to suggest that he's mentally behind the game, or not switched on. A long absence would effect mental as well as physical sharpness, but I think he has been easily our best CB every time I've seen him play this season. And he continued to offer a threat and get involved in play when he did get forward yesterday. We're obviously looking at the same thing and seeing something different, but that's not unusual really - every one of us has his or her own perspective.
Wes had a good game, he's playing himself in nicely. For me Virgil looked fractionally the more accomplished and confident defender (which is what he is. Sometimes I think people remember how effective he occasionally was getting forward before his injury, and forget that is not his job)..
Ok . Term or phrase maybe. Is that really part of the discussion? If we're being unnecessarily pedantic, it does seem there is an issue with Virgil, judging by the comments
Whilst we missed him, it was mainly the knowledge that one of our best was unavailable. In reality Yohi and Stephen gave admirable performances and defensively we were good at the end of the season.
He also strides about the pitch looking like a boss and controlling everything around him. Or at least he did at the start of last season. Its ok though we have Lemina now.
If all our challenges are a shoe lace away from a penalty we got nothing to complain about. so we can't complain about one.
It wasn’t that it was near to being a pen, it was a crap bit of defending tbh. His only blot the whole game for me though.
Really? Go and watch it. It was an awful, lazy lunge.... lucky boy. Apart from that he played well, as did Virgil.
Yeah I don’t disagree, and I’m sure there is a little half-heartedness in there, but take Everton’s goal, he had badly turned his ankle previously and slipped at the vital moment. These things happen in football and maybe we want to think Virgil was massively different prior to his injury and attempts to leave, but he still made mistakes then and we sure as hell let in goals before too.
Shows how views differ, eh, Archers? I thought Wes was better than Virgil, who wasn’t bad, but not as good. I’ll give him slack cos he’s had a bad injury and he turned an ankle early on, but to me, Wes outplayed him. We’re very lucky to have such good CBs at the moment, hope Jack doesn’t get stale.
Fair point. Maybe I am being too hard on him. Difficult to enjoy watching a player when you know he’s off soon.
The good news is that Sane isn't fit for Wednesday, the bad news is that Jesus will play out on the left instead...doh!
My issue for a while now, but, on the other hand, we get to see players of high calibre who are here for a while, then go on to (sometimes - Morgan, please note) greater things. I see that as a positive. I’d love to see Virgil, Mario and, maybe, even Pete light up the CL for a Spanish team, just not a PL team!
Completely agree, I’m not enjoying it as much. I guess it must feel like getting a nice blow job off your girlfriend who you know has been looking around on several dating sites. Her hearts clearly not in it, but it’s still better than your other options just now. Guess it’s time to work her head for you, in the case of Virgil and remind her that until she ups her game, treats it with respect and lashings of tongue, that fit lad in Liverpool won’t be texting her back come January...
