You know... I'm actually warming to the idea of Mandy coming back. He could be useful at squad level. What do you think his true worth actually is?
I'd say no more than £10m.

ANDY CARROLL is back on Newcastle United’s radar with the Geordie boy believed to be on a list of summer targets for Alan Pardew.

The Chronicle understands Carroll would be “open” to the lure of a return home this summer – if presented with the opportunity.

FIFA regulations have meant a bid for the former No 9 in January was never on the menu for the Magpies.

Even though United would have been within their rights to secure the player’s services via a purchase, the rule book means the Geordie star would not have been eligible to play until the start of the 2013/14 season.

Carroll is on loan at West Ham and has just returned from a knee injury.

It is uncertain whether West Ham will press ahead with their invite to sign him permanently for £17m in the summer.

The fact the Hammers have also added Brazilian striker Wellington Paulista on loan also indicates the Londoners are looking at other options.

At 24, Carroll still very much fits into Newcastle’s blueprint and staff at the club know exactly what he can do.

He also has a good rapport with managing-director Derek Llambias.

The bonus for Newcastle – who were prepared to offer £12m for the player last summer after an initial loan – is this transfer fee is likely to come down again this summer if Liverpool fail to sell him to West Ham.

Yet a fresh loan move to Tyneside, with a view to a permanent deal, would also be a possibility again if Newcastle were prepared to pay some of his wages.

Wages would be the hurdle for the Magpies but, given that Liverpool have been told to trim down their wage bill and Joe Cole earned a £3m pay off to leave for West Ham 18 months before his deal with the Reds expired, there is plenty of flexibility to make a deal happen.

As ever, if Newcastle can tick all of the right boxes financially in the all-round package, then the return of a fully-fledged England international with a proven goalscoring record at his hometown club would appeal. Sources close to Carroll say the 6ft 4in centre-forward is only focused on the last 14 games for now and was expected to be involved against League Cup finalists Swansea today at Upton Park.

He said: “I have been wanting to get out there since I have been injured.

“I have been in the gym and treatment room working hard to get fit.

“It has taken a while but I am back and it was a great feeling to have those few minutes under my belt.”

However, it is his long-term future which has a question mark hanging over it.

A United source still close to Carroll told the Chronicle: “Andy has no issues with West Ham.

“He is focused on matters on the field with them and has been chuffed with their fans after getting such a warm welcome in the East End before being hit with injury.

“After the season he will consider his options properly but wants to know what the longer-term future holds like any player.

“Newcastle are still a club close to his heart and the lure of returning to home would be appealing to him.”

It remains unclear whether West Ham want to complete the signing of Carroll permanently or not.

His former Toon boss Sam Allardyce must also convince the West Ham board to cough up £17million.

Big Sam said: “Andy has only notched one goal for us so far and he has to score more.

“He has missed a huge chunk of games with the two injuries he’s had since he joined us.”

As reported here last night, Pardew is eyeing a “big striker” for next term to complement attacking options such as Papiss Cisse, Yoan Gouffran, Hatem Ben Arfa and Adam Campbell.

Pardew admitted in December he was still a fan of the England international, but the fact Carroll had already starred for West Ham and Liverpool this season meant a transfer back to Tyneside would not have been possible due to FIFA rules.

United bid £12m for Carroll during the last summer window with a view to making the deal permanent after a loan spell, but back then the bid was turned down by the Kop outfit.

Carroll has been told by Rodgers he has no future at Liverpool – even though some Reds fans still think he still has plenty to offer.

And the Teams lad wanted to prove himself to the former Swansea boss and Scouse fans this season.

£6million sounds reasonable. Wouldn't get him for that though.

I'd like him but it'll need to be for a heavily reduced fee now given his injury woes

£10 million for an injury prone striker whose goal-scoring record is worse than Danny Graham's? I'm thinking he's worth £3-4 million max these days...

Please dear Sissoko don't buy him back. Lukaku would be a much better signing!

Was talking to a few guys at the game on Saturday about Andy, one of them knew somebody that knew somebody and said that contact had been made and there was a fair chance of him coming back but for nowhere near what he's been getting.

Unless Chelsea get rid of Torres he might be available on loan next year, would much rather see him in than Mandy. We really don't want absolute crocks in this squad, and I personally don't want a player brought in who will give Pardew an excuse to play hoofball every game, even if Carroll is ok with ball at feet. I don't see why we'd have tried so hard to buy Remy if we really wanted Andy anyway, the plan is never going to involve having Andy Carroll, Cisse + a Remy type player surely? Especially at the inflated price Mandy will go for just because he's English.

Young, pacey, strong, good finishing... Now go and work your magic Carr!

Andy Carroll can comeback when he's a journeyman 30 year-old and we want someone to warm the bench because the Ameobi production line has ceased manufacture!

we could always send in Sissoko to do the deal.
I can just see the headlines 'Carroll returns to Toon for £1m and agrees to play for free'.

I think its the power that Pardew is after, the ability to lead the line which Cisse can struggle with sometimes. Remy is powerful lad and can do it. Carroll can. There are other options though all around the world.

I think Lukaku has already requested to stay at WBA. I can't see Chelsea doing business with us for all we are not in the top bracket of teams. If he was an option he'd be absolutely perfect.

Pardew likes to play football on the deck, now he has a good set of options, and will hopefully have learnt how to get the players to still play when things aren't so good, I don't think hoofball will be the way. He has to learn how to manage players minds better. They went into panic mode all too often in our bad run and even against Villa. Obviously not all down to him as the players have to back themselves, but Pardew struggled to get through to them. Obviously the Willo factor can't be ignored................

The other question is will Carroll accept not being automatic first choice? I'm not sure he would given his lack of action. For the money would we not be better served going to buy Rhodes and Austin from the fizzy pop for the same money? Two options, with all round games who bag a lot of goals.

Problem with fizzy pop players is they tend to go for premier league prices because the clubs are looking for a payday. Zaha, to me, looks very very raw and I can't see him doing well at Man Utd, even with their record with prospects. He went for £10-15 million and he'd only scored about 5 times this season! Craziness!

There's also the Jermaine Beckford problem associated with such players. Unless you can snaffle such talent cheap, they are invariably not even close to being worth the outlay.

Realistically, I'm ridiculously excited again. The squad is short about 2 players from being Top 4 quality in my opinion, and I think they'd push it if we keep them together for next season. I have my reservations of the manager, but the squad seems up there. Inevitably we'll sell everyone in the next window now or get relegated <wah>

Zaha is way over priced on what I have seen. I've been impressed by him but 15m!! I actually think Ince looks a better player.

Rhodes is a player I've always liked, the lad is a talent. It would have been nice if Clarkie had flogged him and Pilkington cheap to us when he had them at Huddersfield! I watched a few round ups of the fizzy pop to see what all the fuss was about with Austin and on the highlights he just looked amazing. So I watched him live against Blackburn and you see why he is the subject of so much interest. Like you say it would depend on fees. Neither would suffer Beckfords fate though, just more natural footballers.

Zaha I can't see being the same but we will see And fergie is a gd judge normally
    But 15m is ott

Anywayz, I really don't think its hard for us to agree terms with Mandy....
The big problem is if you're Liverfool, would you eat humble pie and accept giving us 20 over million for free?

I'd gladly pay the 10m for Carroll, but he's had some concerning injuries recently. I wouldn't go as far as to call him Injury prone, but I wouldn't take any risks.

I'd prefer Benteke if we're going for a target man. Benteke wins everything in the air, and is scoring for fun. I'd pay 15m for him.
