Match 38 of 42 George Armitage served in France and Greece during the Great War, in which his brother Robert was killed in action. George was forced to retire from the Army in 1918 probably due to catching Tuberculosis, but eventually he recovered enough to play football for Charlton Athletic almost right through the 1920's - as an amateur player throughout. He also played for the England Amateur team while at Charlton. Sadly, George suffered a recurrence of TB in the mid 1930's and became very ill. He spent the last spell of his life in the Preston Hall Sanatorium in Maidstone, suffering from depression linked to his illness. He apparently took his own life in 1936 aged just 38. Leyton FC, where he had played in the FA Amateur Cup Final in 1934, led the tributes to George Armitage, who was well known and loved as a legend of Amateur football.
