Predictable one for me is the cup final , expected a pasting so to compete and make it a game was amazing , also when we drew 2-2 at anfield , they were top and our early season form was dipping so once again I expected a pasting and for 30 minutes Mendy was unplayable , but I'd have to go for the less predictable 1-1 draw with Millwall in 1991, I was only 8 and my first game a few weeks before was a boring 0-0 ..millwall game were the first goals I ever saw live , on an unbelievable green pitch under the floodlights , great memory.
This one always sticks in the memory for me. 1 up, 3-1 down 4-3 down, Windass hat-trick, and an unlikely Steve Moran last minute equaliser. You'll do well to find a better Penalty than Deano's as well.
The Cup Final was brilliant, but our first year in the PL & we’d had some brilliant results, then we went to Liverpool, 2-0 up & we were looking good, then the cheating twat Gerrard fouls Turner twice & they get a draw out of it. That’s when I realised the PL was never going to be fair. There have been a couple of games v Chelski too that have ended in losses or draws that have involved fouls against us. Another game v Brighton years ago ended 0-0 at BP, the ball had crossed the line just & was stuck behind the post & the net for about 5 seconds, before they pulled it out. Then the ref waved play on, with us all celebrating & going wtf? Can’t remember any more details about it.
Torquay United 3-3 '97. 3-1 up and conceding two goals in injury time to grab a draw from the jaws of victory. Summarises perfectly life as a City fan. It felt like a kick in the bollocks.
Just shy of a month from this Friday's match, 52 years ago; Venue: Stamford Bridge. Opposition: Chelsea Occasion: FA Cup 6th round Date: March 26th, 1966. The most thrilling, dramatic City game I've ever witnessed live. 10 minutes to final whistle, score Chelsea 2- 0 Hull City AFC. Ken Wagstaff weaves his magic and scores twice before the final whistle. Attendance: 45,000 + Final score: Chelsea 2-2 Hull City AFC. The Ref: Jack Taylor had ignored a blatant Chelsea hand ball on their goal-line in the first half too ! Sadly, we lost the replay 1-3 at BP a few days later, Simpkin netting a stunning 30 yarder. 3 of us had hitch-hiked down from Leeds for the weekend. Chatting to a couple of Chelsea fans walking out of the ground after the match surprised us all. They were extremely complimentary about the City team and suggested we were unlucky not to defeat them as a last second Jarvis blast just shaved the top of the Chelsea bar with Bonnetti beaten. Most unforgettable day in City's history for me.
Always sticks in mind as I was forced to work that day and numerous people there - all from Hull - came to laugh in my face at City “blowing it again”. Of course they all supported Hull FC and a PL team.
In recent times it's the 4-3 at Man Utd. As a kid it has to be the 0-0 against Liverpool League Cup early 1970's.
4-4 vs that Massive club in 70 or 71... I left with me mates with 4 minutes to go with the score City 1-4 Massive club, only to find out it finished 4-4.
Both pushes were yards from Alan (£ucking) Wiley, who shat on us that day, big style. We should have had a pen.
For some reason I thought we lost that one 3-4. Was it 3-3? It certainly felt like a kick in the clems at the time, feels like a victory now.
These are my two also. As my single favourite I have to go for the 4-4 draw. I was there for both games
FA Cup Final 2-2 at Anfield. 4-3 at Old Trafford. Was at the 4-4 draw with Wednesday stood on Bunkers Hill but it got a bit lively late on and I can't remember a lot of it.. mind you I was only 8 at the time.
Arsenal away FA Cup 6th, 2008-9. Switched to a Thursday night to accommodate Arsenal for some reason. They let season tickets holders in for free and charged us £30 plus. We went 1-0 up through Nicky Barmby, then we scored again a few minutes later from a corner. All the ground thought it was a goal except the linesman who flagged for offside, and the ref after giving a goal changed his mind, so still 1-0 to us at half time. The ref was the awful Mike Riley who booked several of our players in the first half but missed a GBH on Ian Ashbee which knobbled him and ruled him out for the second half. Wengner is said to have stormed into the referees room at half time and bollocked him over our 'strong arm tactics and time wasting'. So minutes into the second half we had six or seven players on yellow cards in no time at all. Arsenal eventually equalised late on, and to be fair they deserved it, but City were clinging on for extra time until, once again with minutes to go an Arsenal player threw himself to the ground on the edge of our box and Riley couldn't wait to award the free kick. From which, forget his name, one Arsenal player was stood 10 yards behind the wall, clearly offside, obstructing Myhill's view, the ball was chipped up and headed in to the net from an offside position. The goal was given with no hesitation at all. The Arsenal fans to our left rushed the dividing fence celebrating as though they'd just won the European Cup. Then it filtered through to the City fans from those watching on SKY that the winning goal was 'clearly offside' After the game Fabergas spat in Brian Hortons face and the dirty bastards even got away with that.
