I have been invited my mates to go up to Farnborough to watch North Ferriby play in the FA Trophy on Saturday. It's not really my cup of tea, but I have been ordered out of the house by the wife for the afternoon and there is no City match on, so I have accepted. Should I look out for any players in particular? Is anyone else from here traveling down? I know that my going may appear to fly in the face of what I have posted on another thread about only supporting one club and I still actually feel the same way. If it wasn't for the invite I would not really be interested, but I am happy to take any criticism on the chin. I doubt that I will ever watch North Ferriby play again, but I would be happy to see them progress in the FA Trophy. In fact just to put this in context, I wouldn't mind a trip to watch Lokeren play either.
You're just going to watch a footy game. You're not going to be buying a shirt and scarf and actually supporting them. It's all good Mel. You won't be able to help yourself shouting and screaming and "taking the side" of presumably NF, but, that is just instinct and perfectly acceptable.
No. General, uncontrolled shouting and swearing and stuff. Its only if you care that you're giving support, otherwise its just noise and primeval urges.
But you said "taking the side of". Surely when combined with said screaming and shouting, that pretty much constitutes most people's definition of how a footballer supporter shows support for a team?
Sweet Jesus H Christ no. If you think thats what it means to be a supporter, then, I feel sorry for you. Its much more than that. What's inside matters more than the outward display. Picking a side is just that. You have 2 teams, you naturally want to throw your attention to one or the other, otherwise you're just a soulless spectator. So for the purposes of winning or losing, you take one side or the other. In this instance, you're not going to be singing NFs songs, or cheering directly for them, you'd be doing just general stuff like "oh cmon for ****s sake" and "What the **** was the ref thinking?!" or "Oooo nice shot <claps>".
Well I said most people, it's not really how I show support myself. You're right, it is what's inside, but if you're a neutral going to a game, chances are you're going to have more of an affinty to somebody like Ferriby than the other side, therefore you'll be willing them on to score and win. Like it or not, that's supporting somebody, even if it's only a tiny bit. It's not as black and white as "you can" or "you can't". I went to a Walsall game once with my uni mate, they were playing Chesterfield. I joined in with their songs, not afraid to say I lent them my support that day. I don't support Walsall every day like I do CIty, but I did give them my support on the day.
I don't even sing and chant at home matches at the KC, (west stand upper syndrome) so I doubt that I will do much more than clap or shout the occasional hurrah. I go to watch my grandson play Sterling and would not consider myself a Windsor supporter because of it.
Just go to the game Mel Have a good day with your mates If you want the cheer on ferriby do so, And if you don't want to then don't. As long as you have a decent day that's all that matters .
You might be waiting a while for a response, the last post was May 2013... http://northferribyunitedfc.lefora.com/
Just go and savour non league football. Have a beer in the clubhouse and move freely around the ground. Ale at half time and then after the game. Ferriby to win 2-0
