I would like others to tell me what McClean brings to the side. For me, a draw would be a good result. We drew against Brighton at home when they were 6th in table as are Wolves.

    Naturally left footed.

    Combative / Energetic

Strong in the air , probably something SAS are looking for in set pieces (both attacking & defending)

Has ability to pick out intelligent runs with long cross pitch passes.

Agreed - McLean is far from perfect, but he brings attributes to the team that otherwise we would massively be lacking.

And for me, he’s the sort of central player who if he plays well, we get a good result and if he plays poorly we get a bad result, so he’s clearly pretty central to general performance.

Interesting to see, given the comment above about McClean and his left foot, that McClean is on the right side of the midfield three and Gilmour, a right footer, is on the left. That was the way round last week too - that’s a clear change from Farke I think.

Doesn't that make it easier for both players to switch play ?

Yeah, potentially - also enables them to do the cut inside and shoot option. But equally it makes it less natural defending out wide. It’s just different isn’t it, an interesting change.

Well, Newcastle are losing, so whatever happens later we are still going to be ahead of the billionaires.

If we , sorry, when we win today, we will be 5 points above " the richest club in the world". Still no wins for them. Long may it continue, especially for their next match.

I tend to think the same and that McLean will be on the left and Gilmour on the right. McLean will help out Williams and Sargent's defensive capabilities will give Gilmour more freedom to be creative.

Yes. See, for example, their heat maps from the Southampton game. Which side did each play on? Both.
