One appointment to many. Has failed in all coaching jobs other than at Watford in what was probably the most entertaining attacking football many of us have witnessed other than GT's early seasons at the helm. A footballing genius that unfortunately is not cut out for the top coaches position. Would have made a brilliant pundit but wanted more.
He got the dreaded vote of confidence and knew what that foretells? Lovely guy and I wanted him to succeed. He does seem to have a habit of walking though.
I don't know why it went wrong but they were near the play-offs when he took over... Trouble is Birmingham didn't have the attacking quality we had to counter the defensive issues (we weren't exactly a tight ship at the back..) Look what happened with Zola here when we lost the likes of Abdi and Vydra was off form. He soon went..
Mark, it's simple - Rowett played to their strengths. Unfortunately for him, the style of football wasn't what the owners wanted which is why they appointed Zola. A message for the Birmingham owners - Be careful what you wish for...
Maybe he should be an attacking coach somewhere and just help the forwards? Certainly seems in all his jobs he has come up short. With us he refused to compromise and lend some importance to solid defence which was his undoing. He does have integrity and that's why he resigns before he is sacked. He looked very sad in the photos today, he should take a long break.
Think he is too nice to be a manager. Also, he might not really fit into the "Italian" way of managing given the attacking strength he had. That goal, the best passing move I have ever seen at Watford, was a gem. Who was that against???????
Zola's problem is simple to me. He does not seem to understand defending. It was evident when he was with us.
I think he got lucky with us, where he was given a great group of players to work with - many were probably too good for the Championship! Just one of those things where it all just clicked and made for some fantastic games As nice a guy as he is, he probably isn't overly suited to the English game, and as someone suggested, maybe a role as a forward's coach would be more suitable - or maybe go to the Italian (or even French) league.
Cheers Mex - you'd have to go a long way to find a better three goals than those. Would go as far as to say you wouldn't find better.
