9 September 1970, Spurs 3 Swansea 0. Peters, Morgan, Perryman. On the way to winning the League Cup in 1970/71.
9th September 1967 Spurs 2000th league match Tottenham Hotspur 2 Sheffield Wednesday 1 Gilzean & Saul
A number of sources mention that, but not correct. The 2000th FL game was 5 later v. Coventry on 14 October 1967, Spurs clarified that when they passed 4000 in the FL/PL v. Leicester in 2017.
10 September 1966, Spurs 2 Manchester United 1. Gilzean, Greaves. 2 late goals from the G men win it.
11 September 1976, Spurs 1 Leeds 0. Jones. Just 12 wins out of 42 in div 1 and Spurs relegated, promoted back the following season.
The decline seemed to have been a slow motion train crash stretching over a couple of seasons before. So you could argue that relegation was the "wake up call" to the club to do what was necessary in order to refresh itself Job done IMHO, with the signings of Ossie and Ricky, domestic + UEFA finals/trophies, finishes at the business end of the league table (even daring to dream in 1982, 1985 etc) . And the return of silky smooth Spurs football (in the silky smooth 1982-3 kit) .
This result followed a 3-2 win at Manchester United and a League Cup win at Middlesbrough so things were looking good, but the following week Spurs lost to Liverpool at Anfield, I was there. The Spurs v. Leeds game is on the Spurs Big Match Vol 2.
I was at that match & almost all the others. What a season! The older I get the more I remember it! (forget everything else ).
This was one of the first games that I was allowed to go to without my old man , me and a cousin went from watford with instructions written on a bit of paper and 2 pounds each , train fare, programme , admission and a bag of chips on the way home We stood with our backs to the shelf down the park lane end and plotted our next visit and how long it would take to save up pocket money and paper round
I remember as a 12 year old my first big Spurs disappointment. I went to see Spurs v Preston at The Lane in 1954. No Tom Finney but the lad that replaced him destroyed our ageing defence. We finished up losing 2-6....at home! I remember asking myself how my team could concede 6 goals.....was this normal? Over the years,as a Spurs fan, I got used to Spurs not being normal on occasions. You could be in heaven sometimes and down the gutter other times. I've always thought that maybe we have concentrated more on the football itself, unlike others, like United,Liverpool,Arsenal and Leeds doing "anything" to win!
Not on this day, as it was taken in January 1964, but this shot of John Hollowbread from our FA Cup match against the Chavs is remarkable please log in to view this image
