Bernard Edwards is one of the funkiest bass players ever, tight as **** Paired with Nile Rodgers and that was how they made iconic hits like Le Freak
One of the most important things I learned playing in bands was being able to listen to everybody else. Obviously you come with your chops, but knowing how to use them in context with what other people are playing is how you create a dynamic. Push and pull, tension and release, knowing how to pare your part back to allow others to stand out, listening to how all the parts compliment each other and knowing how to bring them out. You have to understand the feel to a piece of music in order to be able to do that. Theory helps, but it's nothing without feel.
