Pompey and Sunderland are both heading to Wembley this weekend to compete in separate Papa John’s Trophy finals. But the priority for each side will be trying to secure three League One points at Fratton Park this evening (7.45pm kick-off). The visitors were eighth when Phil Parkinson was dismissed as manager in November, but have enjoyed a resurgence under new boss Lee Johnson. Their most recent defeat came at Shrewsbury exactly one month ago, with the following six matches yielding five victories. The Black Cats enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 home win over Rochdale at the weekend, courtesy of goals from Dion Sanderson and the prolific Charlie Wyke. It means they currently sit fourth in the standings – five points adrift of second spot and the same number above the Blues in sixth. And the Wearsiders also beat fellow promotion hopefuls Lincoln on penalties in February to set up a Wembley date with Tranmere on Sunday. But Pompey won 3-1 when the sides met at the Stadium of Light back in October, with a John Marquis brace adding to Marcus Harness’ opener. You have to go all the way back to 1997 to find the last time that Sunderland triumphed at Fratton Park – a run the hosts will be looking to extend in front of the Sky Sports cameras tonight. TEAM NEWS Alex Bass (foot) and Callum Johnson (calf) are still missing, but Michael Jacobs and Haji Mnoga are available again. Sunderland will be without Denver Hume (hamstring), Grant Leadbitter (shoulder) and Jordan Willis (knee). The visitors also have doubts over Tom Flanagan (calf), Lynden Gooch (calf), Conor McLaughlin (hernia), Ross Stewart (hamstring) and Bailey Wright (calf). HEAD TO HEAD Overall Pompey: 36 wins Sunderland: 39 wins 35 draws At Fratton Park Pompey: 25 wins Sunderland: 11 wins 18 draws OFFICIALS Referee: David Rock Assistants: Gareth Viccars and Mark Derrien Fourth Official: Craig Hicks BETTING Pompey are the 31/20 favourites with VBET to secure all three points, while the visitors can be backed at 9/5.
We have been in fantastic form without playing great. When you consider we have 11 players out injured and have been playing two central midfielders in the back 4 for weeks its a miracle we are where we are I am certainly not fooled by ya current form and am expecting a really tough match Snap ya hands off for a point now
Things are pretty toxic down south. Kenny Jacket and the team is stinking the place out atm. Most people want Jacket replaced but it's not happened. I'd also take a point given our current form!
We never win at Fratton Park either. If we won tonight i would be pretty confident we would go up top two (another reason it wont happen) We have half a squad due back from injury after the cup final so we should be really strong for run in You lot will cause us problems you always do
Two of the bigger teams in the league. Always an element of pride in not getting beaten or battered by the other! I've gone 1-2 Sunderland in Super 6 although it would be pure Pompey if we nicked a win given how horrific we've been of late. You reckon you'll go up? Sunderland should be Prem really and us Championship. But that's life!
If you had asked me a month ago i would of said no chance but we have put a run together of 5 wins out of 6 whilst other sides are having a dip We have been decimated with injuries (11 out) but have a really deep squad thankfully. Once they all come back in a few week we should be in a great position for the run in I still expect play offs but win tonight and i might change me opinion You lads lost all faith in going up or?
Yep we would walk this league had we had a fully fit team, McGeady being left out so long has cost us(probably) Wyke has replaced Maja( he would have been better than Toney in this league) in fact he has been scoring premier league quality goals recently if he gets the right ball in he is amazing, worry about Marquis though, although if we start off on the back foot we will cop it on the front foot watch out ! . Crewe were brilliant against us the other week and the best we have played this season, but we nicked a point. This season is not as strong as 2 years ago. Hope we both go up.
Small chance we'll get in the play off but we are not good enough for the championship and if by some miracle we got promoted I don't belive our owners would bolster the squad as necessary. So we are stuck plodding in this league!
Luckily for us we have just been taken over by a family worth 30 billion so if we did go up we would probably show a bit ambition to kick on
Well its becoming pretty clear KLD is the face of a Louis-Dreyfus family takeover of Sunderland. His twin is expected to come onboard in a few weeks and the family CFO has just been appointed a director
It's only his name and he has 2 billion tucked away in a trust fund. I'm not even sure the whole family would be worth 30 billion. What's the Mother worth, 2 billion?
We've got one too but they give us the change they find down the back of the sofa! Its also tricky with new regulations on spending and profit & loss.
We have 2 defenders on the pitch and one of them is our left back who is hopeless. The rest of the team is filled up with midfielders and attackers. No defenders on the bench.
