I reckon they'd even struggle to pay everyones wages without his money. I for one would laugh if all the players started to leave for non-payment of wages and they start to crumble.

This I'm afraid is true. Russia are too big an influence in Western interests, namely Gas and Oil for them to ever take any meaningful action against Russia. Putin knows this and that's why he's bullied his way into annexing Crimea from Ukraine.

That said, Abramovich is small fry in the scheme of things and he could well be targeted in an attempt to impose sanctions on Russian nationals enjoying the fruits of life in Western Europe.

However, Putin is scared by the US and he has every right to be so. The "Good ol Boys" who see Reds under every bed have only been napping. As far as they are concerned Europe only exists as an entity in its own empire. They are perfectly prepared to call Putins bluff.

It works both ways .

The Russian economy barely has a pulse , the yanks dont NEED to start a war .

The west got the heads up about Russian gas a few years ago when they cut off supplies , since then they have been weaning themselves off it .

Without the income from that , their economy will collapse.
These days , economic warfare is far more effective than bullets.

 

I doubt very much the Russians want a war with the west but there seems to be very little the west can do about the Russian's land grabs in Georgia & Ukraine

Of course the USA wants a war with Russia - a Cold War that is. Increases in tension that go before more and more military expenditure. So instead of pumping phoney money into the economy it pumps those same funds into defence procurement. The economic effect is the same. So there's a win for the US. Now Russia tries to respond but finds just as the USSR did before that it can't keep up - ergo economically it loses the war again!!!

Conflict between Russia and the US will only ever end in a Russian loss because (1) the Yanks will not engage in a ground based war - hence no Napoleon/Nazi invasion problems. (2) modern forces do not require the mass manpower upon Russian tactics have always demanded.

Personally I don't think the Yanks or the Russians can afford to pump endless amounts of money into their militaries

 

They have been trying to DEAL with Putin in the last few years , the "reset" and all that , but they forget that while Obamas background is legal , Putin is a former KGB colonel , Lavrov was a KGB officer , they cant change , even Merkel , the most "dove" like of them all has seen Putin for what he is and has said they cant trust Russia anymore.
