Blimey. Wasn't expecting that. Thank you for posting this, Peter. I've had some lovely responses since the book came out but I think this one is my favourite (with all due respect to everyone else!). I sincerely hope your recovery goes well and the rest of the book is as enjoyable for you as the first few chapters have been. Thanks again for posting this. Richard
Cheek. ‘Tis the place the boys n girls of norf Ull Got and get transported anywhere in the world. And imagination can run wild. The library is the temple of learning, and learning has liberated more people than all the wars in history. He sat there studiously bent over his work (Bill saw him), which lay in a slant of crisp white winterlight, his face sober and absorbed, knowing that to be a librarian was to come as close as any human being can to sitting in the peak-seat of eternity’s engine." And I imagine a young Richard went there frequently.
My library too back in the day. Used to borrow the books on British Birds ( feathered variety). I still have a couple of them, somewhere.
Brilliant. Thanks Chaz. I was indeed a regular at Greenwood library in the 1980s. Though my family did nearly get banned when my dad crudely corrected a book (in biro) about the history of The Beano, as it claimed Dennis the Menace was created by Leo Baxendale when, as everyone knows, it was David Law who did so much to make bullying cool. And the day they got a bulk order of the second instalment of the Adrian Mole books - and I was second top of the waiting list - was a highlight of my young life. We always had tons of books in the house when I was a kid, so libraries were always places of fascination for me, none more so to this day than Hull Central Library. I love that The Decade is in there.
Hello everyone, Just a quick note to say that I've just transferred £8,500 to Dove House Hospice from the proceeds of The Decade. In addition to the £500 made from collection tins on the launch night and the £500 raised by selling the books in Dove House shops, that's £9,500, with a decent sum still to come considering how well it's been selling over the past month (for which payments are still to clear). I had what I thought was an ambitious target of raising close to £10,000 from maybe about 1,200 sales in total for the book. Both of those have been/will be smashed in the first eight months of its existence (sales have just passed the 1,400 mark). There are a lot of people on here who've bought the book, to whom I'm incredibly grateful to, and many more who helped out with the book in other ways. Not606 and the community around it has been vital to this success, and I really can't thank you all enough. A sum such as the above really makes a difference to an organisation such as Dove House. Thank you.
Richard , I notice you can read it on Kindleunlimited but there isn't an option to buy it on kindle , is this anything you have any control over ?
Congratulations, Richard. I enjoyed the book immensely and I'm going to get a couple more for stocking fillers
I'm not sure but I'll have a go. I thought it was available to be honest, for a tenner, but maybe not. I'll try to have a look at the back end of things and get back to you. Sorry about that.
I’m surprised sales aren’t much higher, not a slight on the book , it’s great . A slight on the tight arses who haven’t purchased it
Based on what I know of the sales of other City books, it's a healthy figure (particularly considering it's not a year old yet and everything has been done independently, with no involvement from the club or a publishing house). But I'm not against the idea of encouraging more people to buy it, however.
I’ll be buying a copy for myself to read before long. Looking forward to it. Would rather an ebook, I hate the feel of paper!
I'm going to buy 10 copies, 1 to read and 9 for the foundations of the extension I'm about to build. Congrats Rich, an amazing effort all round.
