... under consideration. Along with the stadium plans, Black Cat House, etc, one of the Dell boys' feasibility studies was a new club badge ... ... I remember being pasted, by the usual suspects, when I posted about it. Seems it could be KLD is going through the box of files Dell left in the stock room Sunderland chief David Bruce admits club will consider a new badge https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/s...id-bruce-admits-club-will-consider-new-badge/
I remember seeing an article on Roker Report a while back criticising the current badge for only having fleeting nods to local iconography. But in reality, it contains much more than the old one, which really only has the ship and the sea. As well as the Wearmouth Bridge and Penshaw Monument the current one also has the lions which are from the arms of the See of Durham and are representative of Deira, the southern part of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Northumbria (as well as being Black Cats), and the colliery wheel at the top. That's no reason not to have a new one though.
That's why the old badge works for me, it's simple and timeless. I like the new one but always thought it has too much going on, also came across as our version of those up the road but without the mermaid horse things.
I dont think going back to the old one is the answer, as its pretty split on old vs new, a simpler design which merges the two is probably what the club will put to fans but we will not be able to decide so will end up sticking with what we have
Aye, it's a tough one. This might sound daft but what does the blue ship badge look like to non-Sunderland fans now? If it looks classic then great but if it looks old-fashioned/dated then not so good. Edit - the current badge actually looks more dated to me
I'd rather have a completely new one rather than re-hash the old one. As long as it contains a similar number of relevant links to the local area as the current one, cos I like that sort of thing. Not some irrelevant, abstract corporate logo, like the current Juventus one.
It is excellent and part of me would be delighted too. Maybe not as much of a thing nowadays but it was enjoyable and simple to draw. I have never tried to draw the current one but it looks difficult!
Must be our age, hours spent drawing the badge in my younger days. It's simple with a nod to our past. Ticks all the boxes for me
