Well let me see if I can persuade you differently. In seasons past, Saints have always said that they don't want to sell anybody, because they want to grow with those players. But inevitably, with our policy of plucking really promising players out of seemingly nowhere [not quite, but sometimes it feels like it] that tends to come unstuck. We can't pay these players ridiculous salaries, but we aren't exactly Scrooges either. To counter that situation we have put every player that we want to keep on a very long contract, so that the very decent money works out to be a very large amount even if nothing changes, and can be ramped up every so often, as and when we can afford it. It also means that it gives us a heck of a lot of leverage if a club comes in. That leverage can ultimately mean NO SALE, because we need the player more than we need the money. This football club is here to be successful and richer, not endlessly moderately rich. So if that player kicks up a stink, then all they do is make the situation worse for themselves, if the club stays resolute. The thing is, we have to be prepared to let VVD rot in the reserves while paying him his basic. This season, for the first time, Saints have spelt out root and branch that they will be keeping the players they want to keep, as a direct policy of the long contracts. Now, they either back that up by keeping their word or the whole policy falls apart. This is their way of stopping the close season exodus. It means that not only will VVD not leave, he CAN'T leave. Or the whole idea of long contracts is a complete waste of time, and the importance of it cannot be simply overlooked. It is so important that Saints whole ambitions lie on their resoluteness. I would suspect Krueger to walk out the door if VVD left sooner rather than later. Perhaps even Les himself. And Les, at the beginning of the summer, and Ralph just recently, have pretty much put their reputations on the line, if you read between the lines. VVD could leave in January, though I doubt it very much. He might even be here this time next year. Perhaps in a happier frame of mind. Note: I've edited this post.
And it doesn't sound like we paid over the odds when you consider what some teams are paying. Is he really a quarter of a Virgil?
http://metro.co.uk/2017/08/22/south...van-dijk-as-they-unveil-wesley-hoedt-6871399/ Metro talks of our clear message about VVD playing alongside Wesley, but the message isn't clear enough as there are still a few Liverpool fans who wouldn't catch on if we tattooed it on their foreheads. http://www.football.london/chelsea-fc/transfer-news/chelsea-liverpool-virgil-van-dijk-13515276 https://www.footballfancast.com/soc...-van-dijk-after-southampton-sign-new-defender
Fa'sure Just watched his interview, comes across really well. Looking forward to seeing him in action.
One day I might take football seriously. My life isn't so poor that the highlight of my day is Saints signing a centre half I have never seen play.
Pleased with the signing, decent promising player, decent price. Just had a quick read about the signing on the BBC website. I made the error of clicking on comments. Some chump called Neil has put 'small club spending tv money no academy sad times' Oldreddave has put 'Wesley honest thinks he has joined a really big club, bless him - it won't take long for the truth to become apparent' Football may be the beautiful game, but it contains some really ugly d1ckheads.
Dear Liverpool, Chelsea, (insert any 'top' club), members of the media, Here is how I see it. Let's work in hypotheticals. Hypothetically, if you had just broken into the Dutch National side and you wanted a move to the Premier League you may want to take advice. Hypothetically, you may look at your peers and think "Hey I know a top Dutch defender, let me ask his opinion". Hypothetically, you may have heard he has issues with one Premier League club. Now then hypothetically, would you move to this club? Hypothetically, would you think "Hey, if I move to Southampton I get to play alongside VVD for club and that will only increase my chances of playing for my country". Or would you think "I know, let me move to this club and immediately my Dutch mate will leave and then it will be me on my own". So Mr top club, this move makes it more unlikely that VVD is moving anywhere before 1st September, rather than more likely. Hypothetically speaking of course. Yours faithfully Saints Fans
