No doubt prompted by our triumphant return to the Premiership, our numbers have increased on this board and I thought it was about time to reinstate a Welcome thread, giving some explanations of how the board works and of the features on this site. So welcome to the "Welcome thread!"

    Firstly, at the bottom right of the main page is a link to the main site rules. To save you the bother of scrolling down they are;

"Although the administrators and moderators of Not606 will attempt to keep all objectionable messages off this site, it is impossible for us to review all messages. All messages express the views of the author, and neither the owners of Not606, nor XenForo Ltd [makers of this forum software] will be held responsible for the content of any message.

By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws.

The owners of Not606 reserve the right to remove, edit, move or close any content item for any reason."

Unlike the old 606, swearing is permitted on here. To help those that have children running around whilst online, there is a swear filter which will replace any swearing with XXXXs. It's at the bottom left of the main page. This will not work if you substitute asterisks or other symbols, so please just spell the words normally and let the filter do what the XXXXing thing is supposed to! For this reason posting photos containing swearing is against the forum rules.

You can also send another poster a private message. The PM tab is top left on the main page, and keep an eye on the notifications tab at the top right of the screen. This will tell you when you have a PM in your Inbox or you have a visitor message on your profile page. The quickest way to send a PM is to click on the name of the poster on one their forum posts and that is one of the options. Just along from the Notifications and Conversations tabs is the "Your Profile Page" tab, and it will allow you to add an avatar or customise your page.

This is primarily a Football forum and we get complaints if there is too much drifting off-topic. If you want to discuss other stuff, then please confine it to "Koeman's Korner", our off-topic thread. There is an introduction to that thread on its first page. From time to time, this may be restarted if it gets too unwieldy on mobile devices. This can be done if prompted by requests from members.

You may find that certain posters rub you up the wrong way but please don't rise to it. If someone really gets on your nerves, just add them to your Ignore lists. This can be done by visiting their profile page and clicking on the tab. Their posts will be invisible to you! You will soon learn who the controversial posters are so please don't reply [with quotes] to their posts, unless you want some "gentle reminders" from those who don't wish to read their output!

A quick word about moderation. The Saints Mods are st_brendy, TheSecondStain, ChilcoSaint and myself. If you have any queries then just send us a PM.

So, what happened to my new thread? Before posting a new thread, have a quick look to make sure that nobody else has already added one (particularly if it's some news from Twitter or on the Saints OS). If a thread is duplicated, then we will merge the two, or close the later one if there is nothing in it but "gentle reminders" from your fellow posters that there is already a thread on that subject.
If your thread or some of your posts disappear, also check out Koeman's Korner as off-topic posts are sometimes moved there. If you think we have made a mistake in closing a thread, then by all means send us a PM and we will consider reopening it. Abusive or inappropriate posts will be deleted, of course. The Saints Mods always work by sending PMs to those who break the forum rules. Persistent rule breaking or just plain Trolling will lead to a short or permanent ban. This forum is usually an oasis of good-humoured debate and we want to keep it that way for the benefit of the majority. (Should you be unfortunate enough to get a ban, please don't be tempted to re-register under a new name. That will usually lead to a very long or permanent ban.)
I hope the above is useful. Enjoy the site!

    UPDATE: 18/10/2014
Warning - New Site Rule. Please read!

The site owner, MalteseMick, has been having problems with Google removing articles taken from this site because of porn being posted on other boards, not the Saints board. This affects all of us because the site is only free to members because of the revenue from advertising to non-members. Advertising would obviously be harder to come by if the site was removed from Google.

In order to address this, the Super-mods brb and Minxy have instructed all the board mods to post a new rule. There is to be no posting of any pornographic text or images, or any images which show nudity, male or female. This includes images where nipples are displayed. It also includes links to such items or items hidden by Not Safe For Work [NSFW] tags.

Anyone who flouts this new rule will receive a 72 hour ban in the first instance, which will increase for repeat offences.

This thread is closed for comments as this subject is not something to be debated. The Saints board mods are very aware that the above issue with pornographic text and images is not a problem on our board, but we have not been given a choice in this.

Thank you all for your co-operation.

As promised, here is an explanation/quick guide to the tricks within the Not606 basic editor.

NOTE: If you trying to create a thread, including an image or images, it is the same procedure as if you were creating a post. With a decent OS like Windows 10 you can literally copy almost any type of image [there are exceptions like images from Word processor documents] from your photo display on your computer and paste it into the open space on your new thread. Put your text above and below it and post your new thread. You can edit it afterwards if you're not happy, or a moderator can do it for you. The tools for editing are explained below.

    Important to remember
    - invariably, any action you perform on text requires you to highlight it first. That is to drag the mouse across the text you want to affect with the left button held down [not Apple Mac] and then released. Practice this first if you can't do it immediately.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, starting from left to right, the basic formatting buttons:

Bold, Italic and Underline - These buttons complete these basic formatting actions when selected. A general reminder, highlight the text first.

Font and Size buttons - Allows you to change the style and size of the selected font. Click on your choice to select.

The A - Font Family button allows highlighted text colours to be changed. Click on your choice to select.

Link or Insert link - This button gives you the ability to refer to websites and articles away from your present forum. Every website you go to has a link, called a URL [uniform resource locator]. These lurk at the top of your browser in an address window and look like this:

    http://www.not606.com/showthread.php...ic-Chat-Thread

This is the URL for a Beefy thread. Now forget the name and initials, they're not important. Just remember the important thing a URL does.

The one above this very thread looks like this [this may be truncated but the first bit will be there at least]:

    http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/177115-Saints-Not606-A-Newbies-and-Basic-Editor-Guide!-(updated)

See it in your browser's URL window..? You'll see it change every time you go to a different webpage. This is the unique address for every webpage.

    Now the method:
Like all text that you want to affect, click on, and highlight, the URL text from the website you want to refer to. Right-click on the highlighted text and copy it. Now come back to the Not606 Editor and click the Link button. Paste that copied text into the popup window that has appeared. Notice it says URL. See.? You may even remember it accidentally..! Once the text is in, click the OK button and a link appears in your post. Once you have posted your message, your link now works to send people to your referred article if they click on it. You can always practice yourself by pressing the Go Advanced button, instead of the Post Quick Reply button, and Preview Post to see if it works.

Unlink button simply breaks any affected URL from working from the editor. Once posted they will not work unless copied and pasted into a browser address window. Of limited required use.

Emoticon/Smiley button allows you to insert a limited stock of smiley icons. For more options press the more button in the smiley popup window. Note that one or two browsers, like Mozilla Firefox, have the odd bit of trouble inserting smileys that can't be typed into the text. It's not your fault if it doesn't work..!

    Insert Image
is a very capable button. It allows photos to be displayed from other websites or on-line photo storages. Here's how it goes.

Every piece of on-line data has a URL address, as you may be beginning to realise. OK, you've found a fantastic picture on a website and you want people to see it here. If you are allowed to display it here you'll get your first indicator from right-clicking on the image. If right-clicking allows you to select copy image location or copy from the menu, then you're OK. Sometimes you will be able to paste the image into the editor window. More often than not, once you have copied the location, you come back to this editor and press the Insert Image button. A popup window appears for that blessed URL again. Insert the image location URL you have copied into it, and press OK. Now an image appears in your editor window. Play with it, lose it, bring it back, but practice with it until you are fairly OK with it. Make sure your text cursor is in the right place and carry on typing or insert another image, or post away.

Insert Video is very similar to the Insert Image button, except you're inserting a video. The Not606 editor is OK with many video types, but if it doesn't work, chances are it isn't on this occasion. It's very unlikely you have done something wrong.

To the basic method of posting something from Youtube or similar websites [other methods are not covered here]:
You've found that video of Leandro Damiao and you want people to see it here. As with all Youtube videos there is a URL for it [what again..? I'll never forget those blasted initials.] Highlight and copy this and come back to the editor. Now press the Insert Video button and paste the copied URL text into the popup window. Press OK and you'll have a working video in your post. Once again, practice.

" Quote " tags around selected text option [available drop-down from the Plus button]. You've been impressed by some text you've seen and you want to quote it, but you don't know the author or don't want to refer to the author. OK, give it some style by pasting it in the editing window, highlight it, and then press this button. In the finished post it will have a quote bubble around it.

Spoiler, Code and Strikethrough [available drop-down from the Plus button]. To use these options, highlight any text you want to affect and then press one of these options. The Spoiler button can be titled, so is also fine for NSFW [not suitable for work] options.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully, that wasn't too painful. PM me or another mod who I'm sure won't mind too much, if you have any questions, but above all, do try to learn these methods, or just the ones you're interested in. The ones to properly crack are the inserting of URLs, images and videos. Once you have them sorted you can post messages with greater variety and scope. Have fun..!

    Cheers

Some links to User manuals and How To guides for the various Smartphones [or pocket computers, as I like to call them] out there.

    Windows 7 Phone - How To: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-gb/how-to/wp7

    Windows 8 Phone - How To: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-gb/how-to/wp8

    iPhone - How To: http://support.apple.com/manuals/#iphone

    Android - How To: http://static.googleusercontent.com...lp/hc/pdfs/mobile/AndroidUsersGuide-2.3.4.pdf

If you want an explanation or advice on these you can PM me.

I may write a guide on the simple actions that your phone can do relevant to NOT606, but the answers can be found in the links above. Just choose the link for your phone type.

Two different ways to view the BBC iPlayer [transferred from a post in another thread as I thought it might be useful once that thread disappears from view]

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OK, it's probably a little late now, but here's an explanation about iPlayer [which Puck was trying to guide you to]. Please read this, understand it, and pass it along, so I don't feel that I'm wasting my time.

There are essentially two ways to view with iPlayer on any given medium, ie. PC, Tablet, Games Console, NowTV, etc... One way is to watch programmes that have already been broadcast and have become files that you can watch online or download to keep for several days until they self destruct. The essential similarity is that the programmes have already been broadcast. It is the familiar way iPlayer is used. So that's one way.

The other way is to watch iPlayer as the programme is being broadcast. Essentially, you are watching it LIVE. But there's a nice and convenient little difference. Even though you are watching iPlayer LIVE, you get a two hour window of broadcast before the LIVE stuff you are watching. This means that, for example, if you come in on a two hour film that you've always wanted to see, but the end credits are rolling, it doesn't matter because you can pick up the bar [that Puck was talking about], and whizz it back up to two hours previously, and thereby watch the film from the start. You are still using the iPLayer LIVE, but you are two hours behind. See the nice convenience..? You can also pause anything for up to 2 hours and come back and resume from where you left off.

Here's a full screen print of iPlayer LIVE and the time bar. Note the LIVE time of 01.42 [which was when I did the screen print only minutes ago] and that there is a bar visible with a white small block at the left hand side. The little block shows which point in broadcast time I am viewing [just after 11.42pm]. Specifically, I'm watching MOTD [Chris Hughton on the screen] yet the LIVE time is 01.42am. This means that I have shoved the white block to two hours previous [you can move it with your PC mouse pointer or finger if you have a Tablet or Smartphone] and I'm able to watch MOTD from that point onwards. This is a very easy thing to do, but it takes some explaining, and I like to be clear. Hopefully, you get it now. If you don't, do say. I hate it when people miss out on good things purely because they don't quite know how to use them [which is why I'm always geeing up Fran to be brave]:

please log in to view this image

Incidentally, you will note the Restart the current programme icon on the right of the screen. The current programme, in this case is always the one being broadcast absolutely LIVE, not 2 hours previous. Click the restart icon and you get the start of that programme, not MOTD. Shame, I know, but there it is.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hopefully that has been of use to people.

    How to post a tweet.

Those of you who use Twitter will often find tweets you would like to copy on to not606 to amuse and educate the rest of us. Here are some quick notes I made on the easy way to do this:

If you click on the 3 dots underneath the tweet, and then click "Share Via" you'll get some options, one of which is Copy Link to Tweet". Click that, and then, back on here, click the media button (looks like a bit of movie film). Paste the link into where it says "Enter media URL". Then click Embed, and the tweet code will appear in your post with Media brackets around it. When you hit Reply, it will be there as it appears in Twitter: hey presto!

If you have tried to register and have not had your return confirmation?
Which in turn means you are unable to post.
The mods of this Forum will be able to help.
Click on the envelope Symbol at the top right corner.
Click "start a new conversation" in the participants section put anyone of the following mods names in there........ and subject in the next box
Beddytare, ChilcoSaint, Channonfodder or st_brendy and they will be delighted to help you.
They in turn will require your user name.....E mail address and an indication of your age range (IE 14-24...... 25-50) etc.
While there is not an age limit on this Forum, we do discourage children younger than 14 from participating, mainly because of the language and subject matter that can often be a little, shall we say, of an adult nature.

Edit.......You must attempt to register before you can use the system to contact us.
