Just stumbled across this while looking for something else, Steve Winwood with one of his finest songs, assisted by a fabulous band including Mr Eric Clapton:

Don't know anybody that doesn't like Steely Dan, this is what made their records so great...

Anyone looking for something new and incredible, check this album by The Anchoress. Will very likely get a Mercury nomination (I suspect), and you can say you got onto it early! The song 5am is heartbreaking.

So anyone remember the band t.A.T.u? They were quite notorious back in the day for their song All the Things She Said with the video of two underaged girls making out in the rain, but a few songs by them I like. Some time last year I discovered this song on Spotify...

While I don't understand what she's singing about (even after looking up the translation), it just seems like a... beautiful song, to me. I really like it, even though it's in Russian, it still sounds emotional.

I've loved Tanya Donelly's music through Throwing Muses, The Breeders, Belly and her solo stuff.

This is from a collaboration with The Parkington Sisters and an album of cover versions, this one being an Echo and the Bunnymen classic...

You should read up on them a bit. It's not a very nice story.

They're both pretty horrid creatures. And the act was fake and horrid to go with it.

Never knew about those pretty disgusting comments. I though that Russia was more enlightened and liberal these days.

It is illegal to promote homosexuality in Russia. This is often taken to include being gay in public.

It's never good when you find out that deep down someone you respected or liked as an artist is actually a nasty character. While I can still enjoy their music and listen to it, it does sour my view of them. To give an NFL-related example, Adrian Peterson has been called by many a Minnesota Vikings legend. And yes, his stats were pretty crazy, however after he beat his son mercilessly with a switch, that very much tainted my view of him, and I am not likely to use the word legend for him.

But yeah, I still like some of tATu's music. While Martian Eyes, I do love and is my favourite, I also like their song Gomanesai.

I vaguely knew Keith, as we grew up in the same area. I haven't seen him since the 80s though so it's funny to see his name pop up decades later. Nice song

The decision to have part 2 dominated by rock guitarists really overlooks the fact that the guitar dominated jazz in the 1980s with the emergence of the likes of Bill Frisell, John Scofield and Pat Metheny. I would also have to say that players like Ralph Towner, John Abercrombie and Terje Rypdal who emerged in the 1970s, also made some great records in the 1980s too. What is interesting is how technology evolved in the 1980s which facilitated players like Metheny and Frisell to experiment with loops and other devices. I appreciate the relevance of the great blues players and more mainstream jazz musicians such as Django Reinhart and Wes Montgomery but jazz guitar was liberated by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and the progress in kit which made things possible which could not have been done before the 1980s. Granted that a video like this is always going to appeal more to a rock audience, I feel that this has totally overlooked the kind of developments which happened in jazz at the same time which really was a massive step change at the time.

It has been interesting to see how jazz guitar has risen to the challenge of the likes of Frisell / Scofield / Abercrombie / Metheny. I quite like players like Jeff Parker and Mary Halvorson although Lionel Loueke is seriously overlooked too.

Here is a favourite from the early 1990s - Sonny Sharrock's playing sounding like Coltrane meeting Hendix. Not quite sure what has happened to the sound on this post which is woeful in comparison with the disc but you will get an impression. Elvin Jones on drums plus Pharoah Sanders on tenor.
