After the meteoric rise of Stevenage within three years, the club finally took a slightly backward step, with a bottom half finish in 2012/13. Gary Smith paid the price for an awful run in mid-season after a good start, before the'Messiah', Graham Westley returned after his ill-fated spell at Preston North End. Yet the season began where the club had left off.

Very dogged and resilient, Stevenage in early season were unspectacular, producing their fair share of textbook away performances, managing wins when not playing particularly well. The club weren't helped by their players being plucked by bigger clubs, and Westley himself. They were central to Stevenage's two promotions and remarkable run to the play-offs in 2011/12. These included Joel Byrom, Lawrie Wilson, Chris Beardsley, John Mousinho and Scott Laird.

Stevenage were riding high in the automatic promotion places at one point under Gary Smith, but then for some reason, the wheels came off and the club entered a nightmare run of defeats which culminated in Smith's sacking. This despite two highly impressive wins, at home to Brentford, and 4-0 against Sheffield United, in which returning loanee Dani Lopez scored a hat-rick.

There was never any danger of the team going down, mainly due the superb early season form, that despite Westley's comeback not producing an upturn in fortunes. He's all to aware that the team need to strengthen next season. Consolidation will do.
