The removing players thing is a very poor idea. The less players the more space and the less skill needed to play a pass. It basically turns into a fitness/stamina contest
how about if its still level play a game of 'red ass' against the opposition manager, might prevent managers going out in extra time parking the bus??
The Prozone devices they use for evaluating players' performances could be used to calculate how much time each team spends in, say, the opponents' half. This could be used to decide matches still drawn after extra time. Or you could just use the amount of shots on target. Either would be better than penalties as they would encourage attacking play.
The problem is that very often the side that least deserves to win ends up winning on pens, as with Chelsea last week. And quite often teams will deliberately defend and defend to ensure the match goes to penalties, because they are scared of the opposition. Any solution that encourages more attacking, and therefore more entertaining, play, must be better than that, surely?
Encouraging exciting play should be applauded, but not much changes how people play in the 90 min part of the game. The better side is bound to do more attacking and, under that kind of pressure, the other side has little option but to defend. No rules about corner counts, % possession, and shots on goal will affect how teams play. May have an effect on extra time. They keep trying different things...golden goal was supposed to encourage attacking play but actually had the opposite effect. I can just envisage the scene after an exciting game resulting in a draw...long pause then figures goes up on score board...Bayern Munich win on possession. Not riveting, is it?
I love a good old penalty shootout, just not when Saints or England are involved. Why change a game that is so popular world wide cos of some old donut.
The penalty shoot-out at the end of the Huddersfield-Sheffield game was unreal. I was working through the game time, but downed tools to listen to the penalties. At the time I was thinking... I know this isn't the right way to finish a football match, but by goodness is it dramatic..!
Hadn't realised that Hudds were 9 points behind Sheffield United. I suppose it's fair in the sense that Huddersfield lost out when they finished third behind us. Doesn't it seem a lifetime since we were in League 1!
A few remarks here about TV playing a bit part in replays getting phased out. I think you'll find that rules were changed under pressure from the "big" clubs who didn't want cup replays to get in the way of their European chances. It was roundly condemned by the "small" clubs and[/I broadcasters as both stood to lose out on revenue.
Penalty shoot outs are brilliant. Sure they can be unfair, but they are awesome to watch. Plus I want to see England beat Germany/Argentina on penalties in my lifetime. Worth keeping just for that day.
Not a bad idea, all players having one of those leaf blower thingies, running up and down blowing the ball along.
