It's been a good week. Club Wembley, victory against them and the news that the joint best bassist ever to play with The Damned is coming back, Paul Gray..........Lemmy played for a short while when they were The Doomed and I was lucky enough to be at one gig. Paul Gray's in for the new album which is to be recorded next month [the first in a decade] and produced by Tony Visconti. There's some doubt whether he'll be out on tour early next year........God, I hope he will and that he's still is remission. As a very limited bass player, his playing and that Rickenbacker sound he has just sends me...............Here he is, minus the Rickenbacker, playing the first song he wrote with them.........He's a god. .......and with the Rickenbacker
I think we did I'm A Believer, Daydream Believer and the TV show theme tune somewhere way back in the 2,000+ posts.
Ah ****. I saw him in '78 and they were really great. There's a great documentary that comes up on BBC 3 from time to time. Lots of good stuff in it but it lasts about 3 hours. Him taking on some hack A & R man working for Roger McGuinn is particularly enjoyable. It contains the story about when he and the Heartbreakers were Dylan's band for a year or two. It takes someone who knows what's what to be able to put ego aside and just love the hell out of doing something great in the background. Thanks for the songs, memories and that Rickenbacker guitar. RIP.
The weird thing about Tom Petty's death is that I was watching it unfold in real time on Facebook, first with posts about him being rushed to hospital, then being on life support, then his life support being turned off - all within an hour or so.
