All Mod Cons is 40 years old today - I will never tire of any of the songs on this masterpiece of an album

For me, it was their first really successful album across the whole piece. That and Setting Sons were truly great work.

Did you see him on BBC 4 last night?

Very good I thought, although bringing in most of an orchestra can be a dangerous gamble.

I enjoyed the concert - I remain a big fan and thought he looked complete at ease which hasn't always been the case.

I like the new album, but as has often been the case with this recent releases it is a bit hit and miss for me. But I thought that it was very brave to take a song like Private Hell (one of my favourites) and perform it in a completely new arrangement and I thought it worked brilliantly.

He has said that he won't tour with the orchestra the 2 gigs at The Festival Hall and Thursday nights show for the BBC were the limit of this set.

Everything Weller did post The Jam was massively inferior.
In some ways though disbanding in 1982 made The Jam the great band they are.
    The music remains eternally youthful.
70s punk angst v 60s pop was the essence of The Jam. The magic couldn't have been sustained.
Paul Weller is forever the front man of The Jam to me - nothing else.

Wow, strange. He is an absolute one off that has remained top notch throughout his career. Style Council - brilliant, Solo - brilliant. Leaving The Jam though heart breaking at the time has allowed him to develop in a different direction. Been on my Walkman, MP3 player, iPod and phone for 30 years always with new music.

For me, The Jam were on the upper part of a downward slope when they split. They hit a peak with All Mod Cons and Setting Sons. Their last 2 albums, both of which I own, weren't as strong and Weller's heart wasn't in it in the same way anymore. Very few bands are making great albums after their fourth or fifth and splitting at that point preserved their memory at a high.

That said, I saw them at Wembley in what would have been amongst their last 5 gigs and despite my hatred for that venue, they were still a bloody good live act. However, I'd rather remember them as they were than see them come back again and play live for the money.

You won't be surprised that I am with SD on this, though I know you are not alone in your opinion, there are a huge number of Jam fans who have never forgiven him for splitting the band when he did. But he did and left a fabulous legacy that is keeping Bruce Foxton on the road today!

I loved The Jam they were 'my' band I was lucky enough to see them half a dozen times and they were fabulous and the songs have certainly stood the test of time.

I have at least 1 copy of every album Weller has released The Jam, The Style Council and as a 'solo' performer, and have seen him play at least once, just about every year since 1979. As I said in my previous reply to Brian, I am not sure that his recent albums are as consistently good as a classic like All Mod Cons, but there are a number of very good songs on all of them and The Style Councils Our Favourite Shop, and Wild Wood, Stanley Road and As Is Now are all amongst my favourite albums and in my opinion he certainly continues to make good interesting music.

It was probably the change of style more than anything. He did reinvent himself as something different.
The early Style Council stuff sounds like a natural progression from later Jam songs, but other than that, Weller took a change of direction.
I'm a simple person - I would have wanted him to just carry on doing the same thing with The Jam forever (although as I said in my earlier post, The Jam were youthful, mot middle aged!)
