Transfer Rumours Summer transfer thread (ins & outs)

Fraser has been a major disappointment. I remember him at the Valley for MK Dons and he took us apart. I notice he has hardly played for Hearts.

 

Next time we played them Bowyer put Pratley man-marking him and he never caused us any bother at all.

 

Fraser hasn’t pulled up any trees in the dog ****e SPL , if anything he’s fallen out of favour.

There isn’t a player there, IMO.

One good game in 10.

We need 8/9 quality players this summer, right across the team.

Today has been a good start though.

 

Minimum 6 debuts on the 10th August.

 

Does that current squad list have 24 players on it? (I only skimmed through it, on lunch break)
Assuming 6 or 7 go out on loan, we're left with a core of around 18 players.

So 12 new signings would bring the strength of available players up to 30.
That isn't particularly lean, but if we could use that until January it would be big progress on last season.

None of the 12 new players to be crocks.
They should all get as near as possible to a full pre-season in our colours.
Let's do 2024-25 like we mean it.

 

I very much doubt that there will be 12 new signings. Henry, Mc Grandles, AMB, Taylor, Fraser, Asimwe, Mitchell may all go out on loan/ Sold. I can see Seven maybe eight new signings.

 

If we only have one decent youngster coming through the academy this season, that will leave us with around 25 or 26 players then?

Now I would call that a lean squad.
If Nathan Jones can make Charlton a top half / top third team for around 30 league games from that squad size I'll be impressed.

We might be interested in Joe Nobody. He’s just been released by Crawley Town, and his Mum once dated a bloke who’s cousin played for us. He scored 6 goals on loan for Weymouth last season and I think we could be interested in him. My first choice however is Nigel Nonentity from Barrow.

 

The close Season is not a good time.

It’s different if you support a Premier league or even a Championship club, because you are being linked with exciting players that you have heard of.

When you have very little interest or enthusiasm for lower league journeymen , it’s more of a chore. I can’t understand how certain posters elsewhere get so excited about this.

I listened to a really interesting podcast about Ipswich Town yesterday.

When Kieron McKenna replaced Paul Cook as manager, the owners took a conscious decision to take the handbrake off a bit.

Ipswich Town spent approximately twice as much as us at the same level of their curve.

They were not silly, and didn’t let rip with the club’s finances, but they speculated to accumulate, and have now landed a £180 million PL jackpot.

This has just confirmed by belief that the slowly slowly/ let’s see where are in / we don’t want to be like them brigade are utterly delusional .

You have got to spend to get out of League One - signing free transfer scrubbers & loan crocks doesn’t work.

 

As you say, spend but do it responsibly.

I was told years back that the season Lee Bowyer got us promoted at Wembley, Charlton's spending that season was in line with where we finished in the league, So from a purely spending point of view CAFC did not 'over-achieve'.
Obviously there were other factors, but broadly Bowyer did what was expected, in line with his budget.

I only hope that the fair play rules now do not prevent us from spending enough.
After all, our ST sales must be a lot lower now than they were in 2018-19.

 

100%. It’s what I’ve been boring everyone to death with over recent months.

 

We can spend whatever the owners are willing to put in. Not saying spend tens of millions but we won’t go up if we stick to the SCMP rules without added contributions from the owners.

Other teams will undoubtedly do that and we will simply be outbid for any top players. Just like we have been since GFP took over.

For the 238th time - you cannot reduce your losses by £8/9M per season with lower ticket sales, lower revenue streams and at the same time build a team good enough to gain promotion. Not unless all teams are in the same position and all teams stay within SCMP rules without non-repayable owner donations. And that simply is not the case and simply will not happen.

 

You have indeed. It's not a simple equation though, is it, otherwise Sir Alan Curbishley and Sir Lennie Lawrence would have had less success than Iain Dowie and Alan Pardew. Charlie Kirk was not cheap, and we were willing to spend big on Madison before we got him free. Curbs picked up players like Robbo and Kinsella for peanuts, even Dobbo was quite cheap as I remember. Even in the Premiership you see Manu thrashed by Palace despite spendin big over the years. Spending big is only half the equation, the other half is that you need an astute manager who has a vision of what team he wants, and is allowed to get on with it.

 

Agreed. But NJ’s results over his tenure so far certainly haven’t been promotion winning form.

Very different financial situation back in the day and today in L1 it is a two tier race. Those that stick to the spirt of the SCMP rules and those that circumvent them with limitless owner donations.

The evidence suggests that if we continue to stick to no owner donations, then we will continue to languish mid-table.

But if NJ can make a big difference then let’s see where we are at Christmas.
