Steve Bruce will have happy memories of facing one of his former clubs last season. Hull City completed a hat-trick of victories over Sunderland, including an emphatic 3-0 success in the FA Cup.

However, since that quarter-final triumph, the Tigers' form has been absolutely dreadful. They've mustered just four wins in 27 Premier League matches, losing a staggering 15 along the way.

Only two of those wins have come this season, just one since the opening day, so it's no major surprise that they find themselves in the relegation zone and two points adrift of safety at Christmas.

A lack of goals has been a major problem with Nikica Jelavic and Abel Hernandez, men bought for their scoring prowess, completely drying up. With Michael Dawson and Mo Diame facing a spell on the sidelines through injury, the spine of the team looks vulnerable, even more so with Tom Huddlestone suspended.

So, on paper anyway, a real opportunity presents itself to a Sunderland side buoyed hugely by Sunday's magnificent win away to rivals Newcastle. My, what a way to ensure your supporters are smiling at Christmas. And what a boost to sales at the club shop no doubt!

The Tyne-Wear derby is certainly a fixture that brings the very best out of the Black Cats, although that in itself raises it's own questions.

It was only their third victory of the campaign but on the flip side, they've only lost four times. Gus Poyet's men are the draw specialists of the Premier League but that means they've been suffering from some kind of inertia in the table, simply unable to kick clear of the drop zone.

All the more reason for them to maximize the chance before them on Boxing Day. Failure to do so would bring familiar grumbles from what's sure to be another huge crowd at an expectant Stadium of Light.

    Lawro said something too.

    Sunderland Team News
Sunderland will be without defender Anthony Reveillere for up to one month after he injured his leg on Sunday.
Billy Jones is expected to take his place after recovering from injury, however Connor Wickham is suspended so Rickey Alvarez could replace him. Emanuele Giaccherini could also feature at some point after returning to fitness.

    Hull City Team News
Hull captain Curtis Davies is doubtful with a calf problem, but Tom Ince and Maynor Figueroa are available after they were recalled from their loans.
Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore are banned, while Michael Dawson, Mohamed Diame and Robert Snodgrass are out.

    Sunderland– Adam Johnson
Adam Johnson is already a legend among the Sunderland fans after scoring a last minute winner against their bitter rivals across the road, Newcastle United. He’s had a slow start to this season though with just 2 goals in 14 appearances and no assists as yet. But the left footed wide player has created 16 chances and been the go to man to turn the game on its head, in that Sunderland team. The 27-year old has averaged a 78% pass accuracy on an average from that right flank and must improve on this. As someone with the ability to beat a man or cut inside to take a shot he’s attempted 13 shots in total – with 5 on target. He’s a big game player and holds the key for Sunderland, this Boxing Day fixture is a big one in all fairness, a game that will certainly be viewed as a chance to bag 3 more points and thereby ease the pressure going into the new year.

    Hull- Ahmed Elmohamady
The Egyptian midfielder/wing-back has been a constant source of chances for Hull City this season, from the right especially. With his characteristic skill to whip crosses into the box providing the ammunition to the aerially dominant players they have at their disposal in Jelavic and Dawson, Elmohamady has created an astonishing 20 chances out of which 2 were assists. The midfielder has had decent success as well in his 1 v 1 duels and has managed to maintain a 76% pass accuracy. His work rate down that right flank of Hull though is his biggest trait as the midfielder has so far been involved in the defensive side of the Tigers’ game, averaging 5 defensive actions per match with 53 (highest) out of Hull’s total of 696 clearances. If he can get some joy on that right flank of Hull and ping the balls in to Jelavic and cause havoc in the Sunderland penalty area, the Tigers can possibly come away with some much needed points and confidence.

    Stats & Facts

    Head to Head
    • Hull have won their last three meetings with Sunderland in all competitions without conceding a goal.

Merry Christmas everyone. Also Merry Christmas and welcome to all the Hull fans. Regardless of differences in previous fixture I'm sure both sides can show good will, banter and politeness at this festive times.

Could we possibly be the final name in Bruce's coffin regarding the Hull job...And if he was to get sacked after the game would he then blame the fact that it is because he was brought up a Mag and nowt to do with results and performances..

I'm very confident of the win tommorow and part of me can feel a biggish win, 6-1 kinda style.

The time feels right for a few goals.

Good day to give Catts a rest. He can be released at Villa.

6-1 is more than a biggish win! Can't remember last time we smashed anyone for more than 4

Forget Bruce, past fixtures and everything else we think about Hull. Just win regardless and build on last week.

The biggest worry I have about the match tomorrow us the ref! Mariner is notoriously anti SAFC from the hull game last season to the Southampton one this he has made some horrendous decisions against us. Fingers crossed he makes it up to us tomorrow

Anyone remember Michael Turner sending off for Gareth Barry headbutts this arm? Guess who the ref was? I can't understand how this ref us still allowed to officiate our games!
