That was only the second goal that Sam Adekugbe has scored as a professional, as far as I can tell. Scored one in the League Cup for Brighton five years ago, and now scores a 20 yarder to clinch Canada's spot in the World Cup.
If we fail to score a goal, at least I can keep telling people that I'm Canada's joint-top scorer in World Cup finals.
Bizarre stat of the day: only one team, from 1970 on, has qualified for the World Cup from CONCACAF with an undefeated record. It was Canada, via the 1985 tournament. Back then though Canada only played 8 matches total; in this cycle, they're undefeated through 16 (with 4 more to play).
Coming to a local park near you, World Cup winner Roberto Carlos. Not sure how many pitches he's played on with glass, dog **** and a bonfire on the centre circle but welcome to pub football Roberto. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/60197741
Filling in a bit of time watching Pompey v Charlton. Charlton 1 up, courtesy of what looked like a goal assisted in part by a player in an offside position. Charlton have also hit the post since scoring. Pompey look quite poor at both ends of the pitch, in the bit I have watched. Could have conceded just then owing to the linesman missing another offside call.
Oh dear, what a shame, never mind. Pompey 1 - Charlton 2. Lost to an offside goal and an OG. Charlton deserved the win and just a shame they didn’t score more.
I watched the second half. They looked a lot better when Jacobs came on. I was surprised to see part of the ground closed off for repairs, or refurbishment - strange to do that mid-season. It crossed my mind that they`d be better knocking the whole place down and starting again.
There are strange goals, and then there's lobbing the keeper into the top corner, while on the ground, from five yards out, with a deflection off your arse on to the back of your head. Somehow, that's how Canada took the lead in El Salvador. Football is weird. Canada added their now-customary late goal and got their now-customary 2-0 win. Yawn.
Can someone explain why is wasn’t a problem that he played for the club he was previously at? Clyde I think? Is it because they are in a lower division? Why the **** storm now?
I think what complicates the situation is that he was ruled to be a rapist in a civil case but there was insufficient evidence to prosecute him. So he isn't a rapist in the eyes of the law.
