I have thought this for a while now but I have been looking at this
Utd have not had a great defence for a few years but they have had an exceptional goalkeeper who seems to save them points.
Barring the odd blip they have had a succession of world class goalkeepers - whereas, who would you say our last world class keeper was, I would say Reina, Dudek and Clemence - that’s it even Reina was not first choice for his country
Whereas comparatively the teams that win things
Czech, cuducini, de gea, schmeical, van De sar, bouffon.
With an average defence and a great keeper you seem to be able to achieve - where as if you only have an average keeper it seems much tougher.
Prob not needing an individual thread but didn’t know where it fit :)
    Just a thought

I dunno about a succession but they have had 3 in schmicheal to van der saar to de gea here.

I guess the best way to put it is they try a lot but have not settled on a guy until he is the real deal. they don't put up with guys who are not top class for long like we have done.

van der Sar is the only one of them I ever had reservations about, for a supposed great keeper he was very poor at defending his near post.

I was gutted when you guys signed VDS. My only surprise with him was that he joined Fulham!

I can remember questioning Juve spending so much on Buffon when they airway had a very good keeper in VDS.

he was old when he got to you and he still lasted quite a while.

Its not accepting second best that separates winners from also rans.

All of us know karius and mingolet just are not up to the top level. Guardiola looked at hart and went and got bravo who wasn't up to it so he's gone and got an absolute star in now.

and of course why utd mugged off real on deadline day a season and a half ago rather than play your ****e reserve keeper.

<laugh> he would walk into any other team in the PL.
I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted out in the summer unless we do well in the CL and he plays all the games.

I just think the lack of confidence in the goalie spreads through the defence. I think teams with a proper world class goalie seem to have less problems with their defence.
The gk coach at utd must be top class, even if we get a decent goalie a couple of months with us and they seem to hate crosses, it’s weird.

If you think he's better than pickford, butlaand, schmichael, courteous, Lloris, ederson or even old man tech you are deluded <ok>

Ever since we brought in Achterberg, all keepers have regressed under him.

We need a new GK coach.
