Former motorsport boss Max Mosley, who later became a privacy campaigner, has died aged 81.

Ex-Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone said it was "like losing a brother".

Mr Mosley, who had been suffering from cancer, led motorsport's governing body the FIA from 1993 to 2009.

He also campaigned for tighter press regulation after winning £60,000 damages from the News of the World when it wrongly published a story alleging he had attended a Nazi-themed orgy.

Mr Mosley, in his role as FIA president, initiated widespread reforms of safety procedures in Formula 1 following the death of Ayrton Senna in 1994.

Mr Ecclestone added: "He did, a lot of good things not just for motorsport, also the [car] industry. He was very good in making sure people built cars that were safe."

Current FIA president Jean Todt said in a tweet he was "deeply saddened" by the news, adding that Mr Mosley "strongly contributed to reinforcing safety on track and on the roads".

Meanwhile, a spokesman for F1 described Mr Mosley as "a huge figure in the transition" of the sport.

My thoughts exactly, however have you noticed there has been no lefty outcry over the Stop and Search arrest of the young idiot responsible for the Sasha Johnston shooting, normally that sort of arrest would have the Liebour contingent of Lammy Butler and can’t add abacus Abbott up in arms, however it’s been strangely quiet !!!

Alan Miller in action for West Bromwich Albion against Charlton in 1999
Former West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Alan Miller has died at the age of 51, according to the club.

Miller also played for Arsenal, Middlesbrough and Blackburn during a 15-year career from 1988 to 2003.

He was part of the Arsenal set-up when the club won the FA Cup and League Cup in 1993, as well as the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1994.

West Brom said the club were "desperately saddened" to hear of Miller's passing.

Middlesbrough also expressed their sorrow at the news and said their thoughts were Miller's "family and friends at this time".

Miller represented clubs on a host of loan deals throughout his career and Plymouth Argyle - where he played during the 1988-89 season - tweeted that the club were "deeply saddened" by his death.

Miller helped Middlesbrough win the old First Division to claim promotion to the Premier League in 1995.

After spending three years at West Brom from 1997-2000 he joined Blackburn Rovers and formed part of the squad that won the League Cup in 2002.

Another former Gunner, Ian Selley, said Miller was a "great character" as well as a "top goalkeeper".

still to young to pass away

RIP Keith Rutter, he played 339 games for us 1954 - 1962 and was an ever present centre half for three whole seasons.

Sad timing but Paul Mariner has passed away aged 68. I remember seeing him score for England when we beat World Champions Argentina 3-1 in 1980 where I also saw Maradona for the first time. RIP Paul...

Is this the Paul Mariner who played for Ipswich when they were in first division?
