My past 5 cars have been diesels with no DPF problems, but I do 30k a year and often on motorways so it does give a chance for the DPF to clear through. If you only do 8/10k a year then diesels are not for you as they cost more to service and are designed for high mileage.
I drive 35 miles up a motorway every day. First time it happened, I managed to clear it. Second time, it wouldn’t clear and garage cleaned it out for me. Then 2 weeks later, light came on again and performance dropped (wouldn’t rev over 2k) and then this is 4th time in total and they’re gonna take it out and clean it out again (for free). Ideally don’t wanna be replacing anything parts and stupidly expensive.
You need a new DPF then, if it does not respond to cleaning out. Or maybe there is to much muck going into it as a result of another problem, possibly burning fuel to richly.
They have life span just like a filter has. They need changing eventually. I do 12k a year and never had a problem with my last car that I drove for six years. It had a new DPF put in when I bought it! Several master technicians (including the garage I bought this car from) have said they inevitably need replacing once problems start to occur. A good run can clear it but usually turns out to be a temporary fix.
That's what I meant by to much muck going into it. The blocked DPF could be a symptom of something else, not the problem.
Gonna go test drive a new car tonight. Ford Fiesta zetec. Has a 1 litre eco boost engine. Interested to see what it’s like. Heard it’s actually very good in terms of power so no trouble on motorways etc. Plus much more economical. Anyone got one of those eco boosts?
My daughter's wedding next week so I'm off to Devon. Will be staying down there for a few weeks so I doubt that I'll be bothered to speak to you lovely people. Have fun, and I'll be back in time for the new season, with any luck.
