IMO He is being a dick. However, we can't force him to leave, and neither should we. The way it has gone is that Ralph has more-or-less said you aren't part of the future, if you want to leave I have no issues, if you want to stay, you won't be first team, you'll have to play with the under 23s. Again, that is life. We won't go bankrupt keeping him, and there is no reason for him to take a lower paid job if he doesn't want to. It is what it is. We gave him the contract, he is entitled to see it out. He will do what he sees is best for himself - not for Southampton Football Club. I am in a similar situation at work - our US parent has decided we should close and I am just sitting here waiting for the redundancy - soul destroying at the moment. I have been in this situation for over 2 years - I could have left like a few have, but I still earn what I do and i get a nice pot of redundancy at the end. Each day is getting harder to function as it is so pointless what i am doing, but I am not going to go to another company now and not get my pot of gold. I could - I have had 3 or 4 offers on slightly more money, but I won't go as I am in a contract and will hang about until they pay me off. Morally you may all say I am wrong, but I don't see it. I have a contract and part of that contract is to give me the best part of a year's salary if I sit it out until they release me. It is their choice to close as it is Saints choice that they don't want Charlie. My issue with him is he is being a bit (well a total) dick and burning bridges. No need for that. However, footballers aren't known for their tact or intelligence.
For the record, I have not commented on wage cuts or him going. I’ve just said that having a bad egg around is not good news. If he sits his final year out in a pub every day, o don’t give a damn... as long as he behaves and isn’t stirring up ****.
Some really excellent 'Charlie Chat' today guys. Nice job. Let's hope we can keep this standard up tomorrow. Another five pages or so would be teriffic.
There does always seem to be a property chain style lull in the transfer market each summer. Usually it takes a big move and the money to start rolling down. I would wager that some of the players we want to shift are not the top targets for some clubs, but maybe 2nd/3rd choice and we might see some results closer to deadline day.
Saw some of the Saints staff this evening. The guy who knows about transfers said that lots of irons in the fire regarding centre backs. A few big transfers should grease the wheels for us to pick up some players. Seems like Hoedt is back in the good books too. I always thought Hoedt was decent but tried to do too much in a struggling team with zero confidence.
As JWP is an Academy lad, I presume we will have to pay ourselves a % of the money that we are going to pay ourselves to purchase our own player.
I agree that Hoedt's self-confidence is absolutely his biggest problem. Namely, he has too much of it.
There is going to be a great row about those thinking we’ve paid too much for him and those thinking we shouldn’t have sold him. I’m expecting soggy cereals all round.
