Saw this on Report, brought back a memory of yours truly being one of the 1st to play on it, after sneaking in when the workers had gone to lunch. It was 1/2 layed and we got off cuts as souvenirs and a kick about, before an angry old man chased us off! http://qprreport.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=21148&page=1#138372
I remember the QPR 'plastic pitch' very well. Shame in a way that the move was made so early - the technology back then basically meant we were playing on some greengrocer fake grass that had been lain on a beach and partially buried. There was too much sand and no give whatsoever. It'd be interesting to see what a club like us, with proper resources, could come up with nowadays. I'm sure that the playing surface would be mich more realistoc, and we'd get back to being able to hold other events in the stadium as a revenue stream (I recall that we started holding Boxing events there, including a Barry McGuigamn World Title Victory)
Remember that Omni bounce song Willy? When the opposition got caught out! Good advantage it was, but we did have a good team then.
We did have an advantage but we also had the best away record in the following season. I was a terrace season ticket holder then in the lower loft before it became all seated. And what happened to the roof jim gregory promised... Happy days....
I remember going to the first game, Tuesday night against Luton and we lost 2-1, also remember the nice looking burns on the players legs and the crazy bounce before they tried putting sand down on it.
I remember everyone complaining that we had an unfair advantage so we had to play all our FA cup games away and as far I know we are the only team to have done this and get to the final, pity we lost the replay. By the way do you remember the mud bath we had before the plastic everyone complained about that as well!
Good to have you hoopsy! What's with the once was? I was at the very front of the Loft for that match, the crush was so bad after the goal, they opened the gates and let us on the pitch.
Our pitch was crap...all those postponements and that ridiculous hot air balloon type device that went over the mudbath....it got blown away by strong winds i remember..
