I did hate Science,geography,metal and woodwork and geography.History and maths I liked. Secretely ,I couldn't wait to get to the Tottenham Marshes and put my football boots on.....

 

1. Ever used such software, when it is defective ??

2. Do you know to show how/where it is defective (can you go
from "first principles" etc) ??

3. Ever been given some maths by someone who wants you to
realise it as software, gone "WTF is this !!??" , and that someone
cannot explain it cogently (the Einstein quote personified) ??


For me, the answer to ALL the above is : yes.

 

1 Yip, Generally when unexpected numbers are input. However, one would hope significant alpha testing will have been carried out to iron out most issues. Most companies producing bespoke software used to enlist clients as 'development partners' to iron out such problems.
2 Running the same from first principles is pretty much impossible. Even in the old days when the Pentium processors were first introduced a relatively small FE program could run for at least 24 hours doing millions of iterations. That is why arithmetic checks of easy to verify parameters are the best QA. I generally test new software with simple problems that I know the answer to.
3 No, my software writing days finished at Uni.

 

I've found that understanding how things work often enables you to do a very good estimate of an answer that will sometimes pick up modelling errors. Some guy on the Los Alamos project once claimed that for any problem which could be stated in a few seconds, he could give an estimate of the answer to within 20% in the same time. On hearing this, one of his colleagues said "tangent of 10 to the power hundred". Only the mathematicians amongst us will see why that floored him.

Nevertheless, the 'back of the fag packet' estimate is one of the most valuable tools going. Being able to estimate to within 20% will highlight a high percentage of errors. In addition, being able to picture something is particularly useful.

I was once talking to a young engineer, a very good young engineer but she could not visually imagine things very well. She had specified some soil nails to be torqued up to 5kNm. I said why have you chosen that? She said 'It doesn't sound very much'. I'm guessing the amature mechanics among you are thinking five thousand newton meters, not much? WTF is she talking about?

She was quite a big girl, I told her that with all due respect, she weighed nearly 1kN. I then pointed out that in order to torque something up to 5kNm she would have to find a 5 m long scaffold pole as a lever and dangle off the end of it in mid air. Once I'd pointed this out, it made her think and subsequently change her mind. I think we went for 60Nm in the end.
