Was it that good? Players were largely replaced like-for-like with minor upgrades. Vermaelen wasn't replaced. Sanchez is a good signing & Welbeck replaced Sanogo / Giroud!! Realistically Arsenal added Sanchez, and didn't add the required defensive reinforcements. Not a good window in my opinion.
I can only assume from the window just closed is that Wenger/ the board have no real ambition and are happy competing for 4th place and the money that that entails from the Champions League. A top striker and a commanding defensive midfielder were the top priority (plus replacing the leavers) and it just hasn't happened (again!) Welbeck may prove to be an inspirational signing, but he has been signed only becasue of Giroud's injury it would appear - when it was obvious during the last January window (and even the previous summer) that a world class striker was needed to really challenge. I hope I'm wrong, but can only see Arsenal competing for 4th place again..................
The board/Kroenke most likely are happy with 4th every season. It's Wenger that should be the one determined to improve on that but I don't really see it. I don't know why he looked so happy at the final whistle against Besiktas, we only go out in the first knockout round every season anyway
Name the last time we had a better one? It wasn't amazing.. and we should have done more to address our weaknesses. We need another centre back its clear. However we managed to survive last Season (with a decent defensive record) with only three centre backs. Debauchy - slight upgrade on Sagna. Wellbeck - Definite upgrade on Sanogo. Potential to suprass Giroud. Ospina - Upgrade on Fabianski. Chambers - Perhaps not yet an upgrade on Vermaelen but more versatile. Younger with even greater potential. Sanchez - A true World Class addition. Surely Sanchez on his own is a big coup for the club?
Needed an upgrade on Giroud, not Sanago. This is a big problem considering he's our only real CB back up.
I appreciate what you're saying Bear, but comparing poor Arsenal performance with poor Arsenal performance is a bit redundant. It's like saying "well, at least we only lost 1-0 this time." Better to compare this transfer window for Arsenal with that of Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Man Utd, Spurs & ask are Arsenal closer to or further away from challenging for the title?
This is definitely our best transfer in a while but we should have replaced Vermaelen and got someone to beef up the midfield. If rumours are to be believed we did try and get Carvalho but there were problems with the 3rd party ownership. Welbeck should have been bought regardless of Giroud's injury.
I honestly think the club went into the last couple of days not planning to buy a striker and changed their mind at the last minute. Maybe they read the forums
Folks suspend your disbelief for a second and imagine IF yes its a big IF that Walcot and Diaby were fit enough to come back into the team sometime soon and IF these two finally fulfilled their potential for us And the new signings clicked F.ck were gonna win the league ! OK I will lie down now
Absolutely possible. We came relatively close last Season and our squad is stronger this time round. IF - Wellbeck replaces Girouds goals and work rate. IF - We get no long term defensive injuries and IF - Walcott comes back all guns blazing. then we could win the league. An important signing that has been conveniently forgotten is.. Shad Forsythe. If he gets the team working on their mobility and strength for injury prevention he could make the World of difference. Who knows what would have happened last Season had Ramsey and Walcott stayed fit. Solving Arsenals injury problems will push us considerably further up the table.
There's no guarantee Walcott will come back at the same level as before, that's a long knee injury for a player who's game is based on pace
