There isn't a replacement out there for Austin, so whoever comes in to replace him will be inferior imo.
This. I said the same on the Austin thread. Gayle isn't the answer, not for the 8 mil they want for him.
We are not going to pay £8m for anyone, even if we sell Austin, Fer and Phillips for £30m+ combined. And if you can pick up Chery and Luongo for less than £4m together, why would you?
Plenty of small players play up front alone. As long as the ball isn't aimlessly lumped forward it's workable. Would much rather spend £1.5-2m on the boy Clarke-Harris playing for Rotherham yesterday. Only 21 and has always looked good when I've seen him. Can't be described as lightweight either.
Aguero and previously Messi are the only one's I can think of. Not sure we can play their brand of football just yet. Can you name any small players in the premier league or championship who are currently regularly playing up front on their own? Don't think its realistic to expect that we wont need to hoof the ball clear a few times a game at least. Not necessarily because we're playing bad football but because its a necessary thing for a defender to do or because its not possible for the keeper to play it to a defender With Gayle up front ball would keep coming back at us in those situations
The Iceman did a great job for us as the lone striker. He was tough all right, but not especially big.
Defoe used to play up front alone plenty. Walcott has done. Robbie Keane did and still does albeit in an inferior league. Wayne Rooney is the same height as Gayle. Okazaki, at Leicester, is slightly smaller. Austin isn't exactly a target man anyway. It's really not necessary for your lone striker to be 6'0"+. It helps sometimes, but the pace of someone like Gayle compared to Austin could make up for it. All irrelevant anyway because we aren't buying Gayle.
