    Umpires -are they needed?

We now have the situation where they
no longer call No Balls(Stokes had been
bowling No Balls way before the overturned
decision after he had Haddin "caught")
If he had been called earlier he would have had chance
    to adjust.
They no longer make LBW or Line Decisions.
These are now referred to 3rd umpire or DRS.
They no longer count the balls bowled.
This is done on Score Board/3rd umpire.
They no longer issue warnings for intimidation/
    sledging etc.
They no longer make decisions on light.
This is done by light meter.

All they seem to do is start and finish play.

We really must give them some authority back.

Perhaps replace them with hat stands to hold the bowlers' hats.

I posted this last year and after the poor performance yesterday
by both Umpires,I am convinced that they are getting worse.

They never seem to call No Ball, and rely on playback if a wicket
    is taken.(Root Yesterday)
The caught behind of Broad off his glove (not holding Bat)
and LBW of Anderson (missing leg stump by 6 ins)
    were both diabolical decisions.
The time has come for the cricket world to tell
India that DRS is here to stay,if they don't like
it they can stay in India and play IPL amongst
    themselves.
World cricket does not need India.

I'm in two minds. All the technology has made umpires worse - they are relying on the technology to make the decision for them and we get borderline LBWs given or not given based on the umpires right or wrong decision sort of vindicating their mistakes. Not in this series though. Agree it should be all or nothing, not per country.

DRS is there for the "howlers" and not the borderline decisions.

If a ball is pitching outside leg by 6ins,surely the batsman
deserves to have the right of appeal against LBW
If its marginal i.e on the line ,then go with the ump.
When Broad was given out caught off glove,he too
    deserved to be "not out"
Anderson was given LBW with the ball missing leg by 6ins.

These are the decisions that DRS are there for.
DRS mostly vindicates the umps decisions.and
with modern technology now available at all
Test venues, cricket should adopt the Rugby
Union way and go to "video ump" whenever
they are not sure,or the "video ump" should
go to "on field ump" if an incident has been
    called wrong.
