I really don’t know about this because it never crossed my mind to change De Gea for Henderson. I don’t know if it is a fair argument to make after the fact.

Besides, are we really expecting a man that made no changes for almost 120 minutes to be that insightful about these stats of better goalie for the penalties? I think that we are frankly asking for too much there.

No, and I get that this is with hindsight.

But shouldn't he know this? You'd think.

Football is very much about stats, it's as if this sort of thing never occurs to him or Phelan.

I have to praise the players in the shoot out. I didn’t even expect 5 consecutive in never mind 10. I also suspect that although DG might have been a bit miffed if he had been subbed in the last minute of extra time, he would readily admit that he’s awful at penalties and Henderson has been better than him. Not dissing DG as he’s been a brilliant keeper otherwise.

I agree! The darn shootouts were actually far more interesting than the game. Every single one of those players did extremely well given they had pressure on them going second. I too was expecting them to fluff it by the fifth. But they held on and kept tapping them in.

Chief is right though. Those stats that wouldn’t be obvious to the viewers should be known by the coaching staff. We have seen tactical changes made in such circumstances to get the best keeper on.

Hey, we are asking for too much again! But there’s no doubt that Ole will be a much better manager when he’s eventually done at United because he would have learned so much on the job than he brought in.

Some would find that shocking, others would disagree and say it's no surprise as he's the most over-rated GK in football history.

He had about a three + year spell when he was at the top of his game but yeah, those days are long gone.

He's back to being the same as the young De Gea who was bullied by centre forwards when he first came to us.

He's always been **** at pens mind.

The one position on the pitch where you can't have anyone playing less than 100% is the keeper. De Gea has been in decline all season and Henderson just doesn't seem solid enough for me, and again, nobody can afford to play 'wait and see' with a keeper to see how they develop, you're either good enough or you're not and I would argue that both should go. We would get good money for both of them and Oblak or Donnaruma represent excellent alternatives, especially Donnaruma as he is available on a free - yes he'd be on massive wages but we could earn as much as £60m plus for both keepers and pay Donnaruma the same £350k wage as De Gea - win win.

The problem is if he turns out to be **** and then with a wage bill of £350k a week there's no chance of moving him out the club and bringing in anyone else.

It's why I'm against ridiculous wages. I'd much rather we fork out on a transfer fee than on wages tbh.

I still think the goalie is the lowest priority and I'd be gutted if that was addressed before 3 other positions.

Oblak and Donnaruma are both international keepers, I don't see there's that great a risk, plus both of them are big guys with more of a presence between the sticks that either of our present two.

Being international keeper does not guarantee consistent performances when it comes to goal keeping. Especially when you have an average defence that do not shield the keeper.

I completely agree with Treble that paying a goalkeeper £350k in wages is just plain ridiculous! If the scouts do their job well, it shouldn’t result in us having to narrow down our options to such binary choices of chasing so-called superstar players that we end up paying foolish money for only for them to not make the cut. One major mistake from a United goalie, and they end up hitting the fence.

I am also not obsessed with finding a new goalie as neither De Gea nor Henderson own the responsibility for our inability to score in games. We lost the final too because the outfield players and setup sucked. Consequently, I think we have way more priorities for outfield players than we do for goaltending.

I'm coming at this from the angle that DG is flawed and Henderson is inexperienced and indecisive. If we can sell those two for £60m and get Donnaruma in on a free we are £60m up in terms of cash to strengthen defence (that money will buy us Varane) - and no worse off in terms of our wage bill.

I personally don’t get the noise about Varane at such price. He essentially cost Real the match against City. If that were Bailly, we would scream that he’s not good enough. But hey, until United pays mega millions for a player, they are rarely seen as good enough.

I’ve said exactly this before at the start of the season when his situation was looking precarious (and I had the feeling that we would recover). We are where we are and it’s undisputed that this club benefited from Ole coming at the time he did. He sorted a lot of the mess that was left by his predecessors. But it is also undeniable that being the type of person he is he would have learnt a lot from his mistakes, from managing one of the top 3 clubs in the world, from managing very difficult players, and their agents and bringing in very expensive players to fit in. Dealing with extreme expectations. All these things are priceless.

When the hell are we going to make our first real signing? When the season starts?

I really hope we're not waiting to see who performs in the Euros.

I'd laugh but it wouldn't surprise me.

Mata's been offered a contract extension.

    He's still worth keeping imo.

Seen that and yes he is.
He still has something to offer in big games/PL but will also be invaluable in early cup rounds (both domestic and Europe) by playing in teams with a large number of youth involved to drag them through and educate them.

He's been at the club over 7 years, not easy to do at United unless you have something about you.

Can't help thinking he would've achieved so much more success under Fergie.
