I think McLaren need to do indy full time to understand the car. And Alonso needs to do a full season too but try and secure a top seat.
It's not going quite to plan for him is it, he should scrape through but I imagine scraping through isn't what he or McLaren had in mind.
If he can scrape in, then they have a week to try and figure where they can pick up some of that missing speed, then anything can happen in the race. It's looking doubtful though. I agree, he needs a full season in a top team or Macca need to fully commit. Problem is they already pissed off Honda, so...
I think the whole team, Alonso included, assumed that they would just walk into Indycars and wipe the floor because they are all 'F1' and these other guys are just 'Indy' and their strong showing two years ago was almost despite he used a regular Indycar team rather then their own professional (read F1) group of people. The lack of preparation time they gave themselves, one test, looks almost arrogant. What was the reason for going it alone, rather then teaming up with a regular again and funding another car? How did they think they could compete against the 3/4car squads from Andretti/Penske who have all the knowledge of running these cars?
It doesn’t . Being a brilliant talent , but with the inability to keep team issues private , means a **** career , compared to many .
Andretti are Honda, and they, understandably, wanted nothing at all to do with Alonso & McLaren, so they went with Carlin, who've had an Indy program since way way back in 2018. He'll win WEC and go to Indy for a season so he can win the 500 I think
If Macca want to succeed in Indy, they need to go full time and get the right people in... Then again, that's exactly their problem in F1. The lack of the right people.
Yeah, whilst the romance of what Hill/Clark/Lotus did when just turning up and giving the yanks a good spanking on their prized circuit would make great headlines again, Alonso/McLaren need to fully understand the cars and just can't do that once a year.
