ok we were crap tonight so I'm going to try change the mood a bit I've been reading through this thread on twitter (so I've nicked it) and there were some fabulous replies. Do any of you have any favorite story songs whether they are true or not ? My song input was a true story .... Ernie (and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west) I now have a new favorite and I don't think I've heard it before but it's a fabulous track . I'll share it later if nobody selects it
Plenty out there. American Pie, a song about the man who sang that song by Lori Lieberman, Killing Me Softly, but the one that came to the fore is.....
Bob Dylan - Hurricane. Story about middleweight contender Rubin (Hurricane) Carter who was wrongly framed for murder
I was just about to post that Bluescull. Great song. Very sad story. In my view Dylan’s best composition. I see that ‘Girl From The North Country’ is coming to Cardiff in December. Hope to get to see it.
Well here's one that chronicles the events and people involved in a scandal that brought down a Conservative government. It seems some things don't change! However, the story from 1963 was a lot more tragic although the attempts to protect the establishment were somehow familiar. Anyway, it's a haunting song that's sung by one of the greatest to come from the UK
I'm a big fan of prog rock so my roots are back in the 70's. Yes are my favourite band and the track Turn of the Century from the Going for the One album tells a story of obsessive love, death and reimagination of life and love. The instrumental crescendo is awesome. Then at the end of the album you have the 15 minute track (20 minutes on a live show) Awaken which is regarded as one of half a dozen top of the range of Yes tracks. I used to be able to copy and paste links for these but as all now acquired by YouTube I can't work out how to do it on my phone. You can Google yourselves if you like. Enjoy!!!
Well written BfB I love reading or listening about how music has got through to an individual. I never really got next to Yes apart from the more popular tracks. Probably too much hard work for my lazy mind. BUT, having been to see them twice back in the day, I was left in no doubt regarding their creativity, outstanding musicianship, ability to tell a story and feel for what they did. With all that in place, the rest is subjective and down to the listener. They've always had my utmost respect though and, two amazing drummers of course. Once again, nice post mate
I have a number of their albums. No duds. Another album I like, based on a novella, is Snow Goose. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Snow_Goose_(album)
Good choice. My brother who has a more expansive taste than me liked Camel and went to see them a few times. I have both Snowgoose and Moonmadness on cd but rarely listen to them, especially as modern cars don't have cd players. I should really start downloading stuff to my phone but being a tight git I don't like paying when I already have the cd or vinyl even. I have Spotify but only the free one with adverts and not much range of choice. That's what comes of being a dinosaur!!!
Rarely listen to music in the car. Just radio 5, unless its a long journey. My 7 year old audi still has a CD player. Can you copy CDs onto a memory card? Most cars take those now. Back to the music. A guy I was in college with got me into Camel and Caravan but failed on the King Crimson front. Another band I picked up on was Barclay James Harvest. Got quite a few of their albums. Octoberon and Time Honoured Ghosts would be my pick. Besides Yes, I have a few Rick Wakeman solo albums. Seen him live as well.
Me too, also a double header with and his son at the King's Head Hotel, Newport plus a concert with Jon Anderson at Birmingham.
