Ok so he is 31 but......

I want to draw comparisons with David Ferrer and Tommy Haas.

Yeah they are "lesser" players than Federer BUT they are still playing at the top of their games. Tommy Haas at 35 is still playing as well as he ever has done and David Ferrer at 31 is actually improving, before the 2012 Australian Open he had made 5 Grand slam quater finals in his whole carrer, and yet he hasn't failed to make the grand slam quaters since and only a month or 2 ago made his first Grand slam final and has risen to number 3.

So why when Haas is 4 years older than Federer and not declining and Ferrer is the same age and actually improving, is Roger Federers game declining?

Serena Williams at 31 is still the dominant force at the top of womens tennis as well.

The key difference between the men and women's game is the physical strength required to stay at the top of the game. Look at Murray and Djokovic yesterday. Regular games with 25, 30, 30+ stroke rallies in near 40 degree heat for over three hours. Compare that to the women's game which rarely last more than 90 minutes.

It's easier for the likes of Serena to stay at the top of the game than it is for the men. Ferrer and Haas are doing well for their age but they are coming from a lower base and they still aren't winning or even getting to finals of major tournaments.
