Was having a chat about the above and for me there can only be one worst ever England player. Graham Taylor’s reign as England manager seemed to allow any Tom, Dick or Harry to wear the England shirt previously graced by Sir Bobby Moore, Sir Bobby Charlton, the great Gordon Banks and many other fantastic players but Taylor decided the totally forgettable Keith Curle, Geoff Thomas, Andy Sinton, Tony Daley and Earl Barrett we’re England quality!! But the player who topped or bottomed depending on your view point the poll IMO was and is the one and only Carlton Palmer. Agree or disagree?
I was going to say Geoff Thomas or Carlton Palmer before I saw the poll. Can never forget this miss - even Joelinton would be embarrassed by it.
The worst performance from an England player I remember was from Nigel Martyn when he came on for the second half in Euro 2000 when we were playing Romania. We were 2-1 up and Seaman got injured, Martyn came on for the second half and played like an utter clown for the whole half, gave them a goal straight away and we went out 2-3. Other ****e that springs to mind is until the Taylor reign - Stuart Ripley, Paul Warhurst, Earl Barrett, Toney Daley etc all getting games, but Chris Waddle never getting a look in! And let's not forget Emile Heskey, not matter how bad he was for his club, he was always an automatic selection under Sven!
Carlton Palmer and Geoff Thomas always get this honour but I think its harsh. I think you're all looking at it wrong. Michael Ricketts got a cap for England didn't he? He was ****e. Paul Konchesky, Keith Curle. Fashanu and Blissett were utter ****. Blissett had a great debut but it was against ****ing Luxembourg and their collection of postmen. Never scored again, and couldn't hit a barn door in Italy. But to be honest this comes down to one thing - mackems are ****ter than anyone at anything. Keegan gave Michael Gray sympathetic caps. He was ****e. Could barely reach the goal with a penner. What about Nick Pickering? Another ****e mackem. Colin Cooper was special. A ****ing smoggie who went to Sunderland on loan by choice and became infected. All said and done its Mickey Gray for me. An embarrassment of a man and a footballer.
I think one of the problems is that there has been so many bad players playing for England particularly from Graham Taylor’s reign onwards. I disregard some mentioned as they only got a cap or two. Tried, tested, failed and then discarded. One or two of these were decent at Club level but obviously didn’t have it for International level. Palmer on the other hand was A regular player for a period and really bad at all levels and on all levels. He wasn’t even a bad player at Club level simply because he wasn’t good enough to be bad. He was an absolute embarrassment in a football shirt. The “Vinny Jones” of England but without the snarl or the aggression. I accept some bad players have been named but no one mentioned has swayed me from Palmer.
There will be the odd exception in every generation but on the main they'd be nowhere near the there's of today... The demands of all sports have increased and Standards improve...
