If you could pick 2 ex Sunderland players to go into the current side for the rest of the season who would they be? They must be from a team in your lifetime and that you have seen play live. I have tried to pick players that would solve what I think some of our current problems are. My first pick is Shaun Elliott. We could obviously do with a centre half and Shaun was class. He was a proper leader as well which we need, and he wasnt bad on the ball so would fit in. My second might be a bit left field but I have gone for Gavin McCann. In our first prem seasons under Reidy he was absolutely monstrous in midfield. He would go head to head with anyone. He could tackle, he could pass and he went box to box. We are really short in central midfield of that game driving player and in his prime he was as good as anyone I have seen at that job for us. Roy Keane raved about him as an opponent. I am not saying these are the best I have seen, just that I think they would transform this current side.
Dave Watson & Joe Bolton Both excellent defenders who took no prisoners. They would probably be red carded after 5 minutes these days though.
Dave Watson and Don Hutchison. We need a cool headed commanding figure at the back, and a midfielder who can score goals.
Steve Bould at the back. Cool as ice and a great organiser of the defence. I'd also put 1999-2000 version of Kevin Phillips up front. He'd be banging goals in for fun in this league and with Jones / McGeady creating for him.
Bould was in my thinking too. Even though he was old when he came to us he was clearly on a different level.
